Hagar: Jewish-Arab Education for Equality is a springboard for social change, dedicated to building an egalitarian civil society in the Negev and Israel as a whole through our bilingual, integrated schools and our Jewish and Arab shared community.

Good Practice: 

Hagar’s integrated, Hebrew-Arabic bilingual school provides a focal point for engagement for families from a diverse array of communities: Middle Eastern and European Jews, Arabs from the North of Israel and Bedouins from the Negev desert, and immigrant from Russia and Ethiopia. The model in which children begin in daycare and stay are enrolled for many years as they grow up, has ensured continued engagement among this population. Hagar’s graduates enter their adolescence with a foundational grounding in their own identity, and an ability to accept, understand and share space with the “other.â€? Their families have continued exposure to the “otherâ€? and form friendship and bonds that set a public example for their “homeâ€? communities.

Project Idea: 

The main objective of the proposed project is to create an “Educational Day of Unity.â€? This day would follow the commemoration of the national days in Israel which focus on the pain and suffering felt by both the Palestinian and Jewish people. It would create a positive environment through celebrations that reconcile these realities and providing a framework that focuses on the commonalities and shared aspirations of the two peoples. This is a natural outgrowth of work that is being done reconciling the diverse narratives of the students and community members that are involved with our bilingual school for Jewish and Arab students.
