Os Imigrantes e a População Portuguesa Imagens Recíprocas

The project "Immigrants and Portuguese population", Mutual Images, conducted at the Center for the Study of Peoples and Cultures of the Portuguese speaking Portuguese Catholic University, is one of the research projects approved by the FCT in 2003 (Project IME/SOC/49843/2003 ).
This project starts from the contention that the type and form of relationships between immigrants and the population of the host society are the outcome of two interrelated factors:
a) the way the native population looks at the immigrants; b) the way immigrants perceive the host society. These two factors help to establish the main objectives of the proposed project.
The first objective is to obtain information related to the degree of immigrants' satisfaction with the host country, possible intentions of returning to their countries of origin, family joining and their perception of racism and prejudice towards them, in the Portuguese society. To achieve this objective it is necessary to characterize the immigrant population living in Portugal, and to identify both migrant and professional trajectories of each one of the different ethnic and national groups that have chosen Portugal as a host country. Considering that a considerable part of these immigrants entered and remain undocumented in Portugal it will be important to estimate the real number of immigrant living in Portugal, including also non-documented immigrants. Thus, the attempt to develop a new methodological approach, that enables the statistical representation of this population, is expected as an original contribution of the study.
The second objective of this project is to evaluate the way Portuguese people look at immigrants and their motivation to integrate immigrants in the social, political, and economic sphere of the society. Since the immigrant population in Portugal is very heterogeneous it is important to analyse if the mentioned willingness to integrate vary among different kinds of immigrants and if the attitudes of the Portuguese towards them is independent from the immigrants' geographical origin.
