General Information
Department of Near Easterns Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen pursues the teaching and scientific activity in the field of history, culture and languages of the Near East from antiquity until present. The Department organizes some special courses for the general public. It regularly organizes two scientific conferences which are held every year – 1) Orientalia Antiqua Nova (history and culture of Ancient Near East), 2) Near East in the Contemporary World (history and culture of Modern Near East). The Department cooperates with many partners in the Czech Republic (Charles University) and abroad. The activity of the Department is financed through the government of the Czech Republic as well as from research grants from the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic and from other foundations.

since 2005 – Electronic corpus of Old Babylonian texts (supported by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic)
2006 – Material culture of Africa (supported by the FRVS agency)
since 2005 – Electronic tools for the teaching of Near Eastern languages (Arabic, Hebrew), supported by the Faculty
