Two hundred intellectuals, decision makers and cultural operators were gathered in Alexandria between 19 and 21 January 2008 in the framework of the Third Conference and Cultural Workshops on the Dialogue among Peoples and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Areas. The cultural workshop was co-organized by the Anna Lindh Foundation, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute of Peace Studies at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

"It's important to provide the right climate for dialogue and to push it forward at the national, regional and international levels by promoting respect for cultural pluralism", stressed the Egyptian First Lady, Ms Suzan Mubarak, during the opening ceremony. From his side, Dr. Lucio Guerrato, Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation, emphasized the role of national decision makers in "leading people and social groups in their country to open-mindedness and tolerance.

The Atelier Culturel was first launched in 2006 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the Anna Lindh Foundation and the aim of putting forward a framework towards achieving understanding between cultures and intercultural dialogue for the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. The first Atelier was held in Paris in September 2006, while the second was held in Seville, Spain in June 2007.
