Overview

The 10th Anniversary of the Mediterranean Journalist Awards took place on 6 December 2017 in the European Parliament, Brussels. The landmark event gathered 50+ award-winning journalists from the MENA region and Europe, international media experts and institutional representatives in Brussels to coordinate efforts to define a next chapter of cross-cultural reporting. The Anna Lindh Foundation received more than 250 applications from 28 Euro-Med countries including: Albania, Algeria, Belgium, Croatia, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and United Kingdom.

The Alumni Media Forum
Leading journalists, media practitioners and youth leaders from across the region gathered at a Media Forum ahead of the International Bestowing Ceremony of the Awards to share strategic thinking on how to define a next era of programming in the critical domain of media and intercultural relations and to reflect on the lessons learnt and examine challenges and priorities for an effective investment in a next generation of cross-cultural reporters.

Selection of the Winners and the Bestowing Ceremony
The Winners of the 10th Edition of the Mediterranean Journalist Awards were selected during the Jury Members meeting that took place on the same day. Princess Rym Ali headed the International Jury committee of the 2017 Awards: Naglaa Emary, media expert; Gisele Khoury, President of the Samir Kassir Foundation; Robert Parsons, Senior editor at France 24; Paola Parri, Deputy Secretary General of COPEAM; Michael Thoss, Allianz of Civilization; and Boyko Vassilev, Bulgarian National Television. HRH Princess Rym Ali presented the Awards to the winners: Annalisa Camilli, Jaafar Abdul-Karim, Umberto Bacchi, Darrin Zammit Lupi and Iason Athanasiadis during the Award Ceremony that took place in the premises of the European Parliament in Brussels and brought together the Mediterranean Journalist Awards Alumni, young leaders from across the Euro-Med region and civil society and international organization representatives.

”This is why the Anna Lindh Foundation's Journalist Award, on the eve of its 10th anniversary, should be a central initiative in recognising and supporting the courage of those journalists who are working to present an alternative narrative to the Mediterranean region today.” HRH Princess Rym Ali, Founder of Jordan Media Institute.

10 Years of Cross-Cultural Reporting
The Mediterrean Journalist Awards Programme was founded in 2006 in partnership with the International Federation of Journalists, the Awards contribute to a better understanding of the diversity of cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean region, promote the positive role played by media in reporting on issues of cultural diversity, and provide balanced and informed coverage in the region. The Programme aims to promote cross-cultural reporting using new approaches and perspectives in the Euro-Mediterranean region, underline the role of journalistic productions in various media formats, from television and radio to online media, in developing the common Mediterranean image and way of thinking, based on principles of intercultural dialogue and preserving the Euro-Med diverse identities, and encourage young journalists to report on issues of cultural diversity and create a new hopeful narrative for the Mediterranean.

During the past 10 years, 55+ journalists were awarded; 10 International Bestowing Ceremonies were hosted in 6 different cities including Amman, Alexandria, Brussels, Berlin, Monaco and London; 150+ journalists and 1000+ media practitioners, civil society actors, young leaders and institutional representatives participated in the programme; 50+ journalistic productions were recognised and 2500+ applications were received. In addition, the initial driver behind the success of the Mediterranean Journalist Awards is the establishment of partnerships and the involvement of various media, cultural and academic institutions such as Thomas Reuters Foundation, BBC Arabic, Asharq Al-Awsat, Deutsche Welle, Al Arabiya, Euronews, COPEAM, Reporter Without Borders,  Goethe Institute, Alliance of Civilisations, Jordan Media Institute (JMI), Monaco Mediterranean Foundation (MMF) and Centre for Cultural and General Studies ZAK.
