The project consists of two components: a workshop focusing on skills-building, as well as an online learning platform to complement the workshop. The online platform will also include a site for “25 Stories of Youth in Peacebuilding”, published in celebration of UNOY Peacebuilders’ 25th anniversary taking place in 2014. The objective of the project is to build the skills of youth peace activists on all sides of the Mediterranean to be able to tell stories of peace and coexistence and to use these stories to advocate for more intercultural dialogue and for youth participation in peacebuilding.
The 5-day workshop, targeting youth from our member and partner organizations will equip the participants with practical skills to use storytelling in advocacy. The workshop is directly linked to the online learning platform as the preparation work for participants as well as follow-up will be done on the platform. The platform will be designed so that it can be used also for other of our capacity building activities. On the “25 Stories of Youth in Peacebuilding” site on the platform, participants of the workshop will contribute with their own stories of young people building peace through videos. These stories will function as a practical advocacy tool for the workshop participants and for our network at large as it can be used to show policy makers the potential of youth as positive change-makers.

The aim of the project is to strengthen intercultural dialogue among youth in the Euro-Med area; to strengthen the voice and recognition of youth in peacebuilding processes in the region, as well as to change the discourse of youth – from trouble-makers and victims of conflict – to positive agents of social change. Through this project we also want to strengthen our network’s and partner organizations’ advocacy and capacity building work.
Objectives:

  • To build skills within our Euro-Med network on advocacy through storytelling
  • To provide a forum for intercultural dialogue within our network
  • To create tools for youth peace advocacy in the Euro-Med
  • To strengthen the impact of our capacity building activities

This Flesh is Mine

Partners
Ashtar Theatre (Palestine)
Granted Amount
€30000
Year of Grant

This Flesh is Mine is a collaboration between theatre companies from UK and Palestine to produce a new play based on The Iliad, with clear relevance to relationships between Western countries and the Middle East today. The project will engage Muslim communities in the UK (particularly young people), and youth in Palestine, encouraging them to create artistic responses to themes in the professional production, and exchange these online. The play will be written and rehearsed in dialogue with this community engagement work, reflecting the concerns of the people involved. The production will be presented in site-specific venues in both Ramallah and London. The groups involved will engage in debates after the performances, which will also involve artists from both organisations and the public. These debates will be filmed and shared online.

We aim to collaborate with Middle Eastern artists and youth, and with Muslim people in the UK, to create a piece of work that resonates with the current political climate of the region, and indeed the world. The project will engage with the tensions which exist between Western cultures and the Middle East, using theatre to build bridges between cultures, open dialogues and subvert prejudices. The project will demonstrate openness, a desire for mutual understanding, truth and reconciliation.

Treasured Trash

Partners
Raaderum office for contemporary Art, Denmark
Esterni, Italy
Granted Amount
€30000
Year of Grant
National Network

Treasured Trash is a 10 months community development project through artistic recycling planned and implemented by Darb 1718 Contemporary Art & Culture Center (Cairo) in partnership with Raaderum Office for Contemporary Art (Denmark) and Esterni (Italy). Starting in 2014, an Egyptian community residing in Fustat, Old Cairo will engage in a democratic discussion on the concept of “trash” and will receive free training in recycling art by expert artists from Egypt and abroad. The project changes behavior regarding trash disposal for the better and to achieve this, we have chosen to apply The Fun Theory: “the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better”.
Treasured Trash addresses the perception of trash, its possible value and the role of recycled art as both an active agent and a source of inspiration for the participating community. The project is a reconceptualization of what trash is, what is truly wasted, how we can deal with it as a community and transform it into something of value and beauty.

The aim is to bring the community together to discuss, work together and solve some of the problems that afflict Fustat. By approaching these problems in a fun way with exciting activities, a change of attitude, awareness and positive results will be achieved. We aim to offer training opportunities to generate income and improve their livelihoods.

With my eyes only

Granted Amount
€30000

The goal of the project was to create A theatre performance based on real stories collected from  Interviews with women with disabilities IN Palestine and Sweden.  The play was performed by Swedish and Palestinian actors in Palestine and now will be performed in Sweden.

It is very seldom that people with disabilities are creators of artistic work. In media they are described without nuances as heroes or victims. We want to spread the life stories of women with disabilities – not from the disability perspective but from the fact that they are owners of stories worth listening to. The fact that the theatrical performance emanates from and is performed by women with disabilities will contribute to this group being seen. By creating and performing this play, we hope that the audience will acknowledge the competence of people with disabilities. The long-term impact of this project is hopefully that the society allows these women to be carriers and creators of artistic and public productions.

The audience will be young people from the age of 13. In Sweden our target group is specifically young people and adults with Arabic as their mother tongue.

Our aim is to develop the art of theatre and spread the life stories of women with disabilities from the perspective that they are owners of stories worth listening to. The fact that the theatrical performance emanates from and is performed by women with disabilities will contribute to this group being made visible. By allowing these women to be carriers and creators of an artistic and public production, the surroundings will acknowledge the competence of people with disabilities.
