Denmark

The Danish National Network

The Danish National Network reflects the mission and values of the ALF and the diversity of the civil society and work across fields including intercultural relations, heritage, religion, research, human rights, democracy and community development, arts, youth and education, gender, environment and sustainable development, and media.

Thus, the purpose of the Danish national network is to ensure the visibility of the Anna Lindh Foundation in Denmark, to inform, reactivate old and recruit new members with special interest in the Euromed region. These members comprise about 52 civil society, public, academic and cultural institutions and individuals who are eager to foster dialogue, exchange and cooperation around Euromed issues.

As head of the Danish Network, Crossing Borders is focusing on:

  1. Creating conducive spaces for Euromed intercultural meeting, dialogue, exchange and sharing of good practices in line with the values of ALF
  2. Reactivating the old members and recruiting new ones to further strengthen our network
  3. Promoting the respective interests and activities of the Danish members
  4. Organising cultural events for members of the public
  5. Sharing of information, updates and opportunities with our members
  6. Communication and collaboration with other fellow national networks
  7. Be in regular contacts and coordination with the ALF Secretariat

Our esteemed members, old and new, vary from NGOs to media platforms and schools, like Finjan, Copenhagen Youth Network, ACT: New Nordic Voices, SOS Racisme Denmark, and Unesco. They all share a profound appreciation for fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding. With common goals akin to the Anna Lindh Foundation, they strive to champion intercultural communication and cooperation within our community. Through their tireless efforts, they promote inclusivity, diversity, and mutual respect, laying the groundwork for a more harmonious and interconnected society. Their work stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring value of cultural exchange. another example would be UNiG (Ung i Gladsaxe), an organization that embodies a commitment to building bridges across cultures and forging lasting connections that transcend borders. Together, they are catalysts for positive change, enriching our collective experience and paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

For this purpose, we have built a webpage, Facebook page and LinkedIn platforms.

The membership is free of charge. If you want to join the Danish ALF Network, please, complete the online application form for membership

As soon as we receive your application, we shall process it and get back you.

الخلفية التاريخية لشبكتك

Although the Danish network has been part of ALF since the very beginning in 2005, coordinated by different Danish public and civil society entities including the Danish Institute of International Studies, the Center for Culture and Development Cooperation and the Danmission. Sadly, in the period between 2018 and 2020, the network was more or less dormant.

As a result, Crossing Borders was contacted by one of the Nordic members which proposed us to take over as the Head of the Danish Network. In that connection, we entered into dialogue with the Networks Manager at the ALF Secretariat.

CB invited the manager to Denmark to attend the launch of our general assembly scheduled for 12 March 2020. Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the Danish authorities locked down the country on 11 March 2020. The AFL guested had to retur to Alexandria while we continued dialogue with ALF and the re-activation of the Network.

While we waited for the endorsement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we continued with activities including updating the Danish charter, setting up a steering committee, publishing the newsletter, attending AFL meetings in Brussels, Cairo, Alexandria, in Gothenburg in March and June 2023.

Now we are delighted that the endorsement has finally arrived. We started working as a dynamic network in line with the ALF mission and values.

General Information

The Department for Cross Cultural and Regional Studies (ToRS) carries out research into language, culture, religion and society, mainly in countries outside Western Europe and the USA. Cross-cultural competencies and knowledge of the world’s great diversity are crucial in a globalised world – socially and culturally. ToRS’ mission is to provide insight into this diversity.

Research and teaching at the department examine the current state of affairs in the 21st century’s social and cultural hotspots, but draws on cultural heritage and historical perspectives that go all the way back to the hunter and gatherer communities, the first urban communities and the development of the first ancient civilizations in the Middle East, Asia and Central and South America. We can only understand our own time against the background of our cultural heritage.

Language skills and regional expertise form the basis for ToRS' work. Each society is studied on its own terms and through its own language, but based on the premise that cultures, religions and societies can never be understood as isolated units. Regional processes must always be seen in a wider context, transcending cultures, national borders and periods.

Mission and Objectives

ToRS’ primary objective is to contribute to developing the knowledge society by increasing our understanding of cultural history, religious matters and social relations in a world whose regions are at the same time both closely interlinked and far away from each other. Through research, communication and education, ToRS’ aim is to make society smarter, both about itself and about others.

Main Projects / Activities

The Middle East section in ToRS: Research into Middle Eastern languages and society is an area of study rooted in four of the major languages spoken in the Middle East: Arabic (the Arab countries and North Africa), Hebrew (Israel), Persian (Iran) and Turkish (Turkey).

Geographically, the area covers a region stretching from Morocco in western North Africa, across the central Middle East, to Iran and Central Asia in the east. Research is conducted into historical and sociological topics, Islam, the media and the Islamic public sphere, urban studies, anthropological subjects, literature and languages.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

The Middle Eastern languages and society Program in the department of Cross Cultural and Regional Studies in the University of Copenhagen is committed to the study of language, culture, history and politics in the Middle East next to promotion of dialogue between cultures. We encourage our students to take part in community development and contribute back to society through volunteering, awareness and disseminating knowledge.

Dfunk Madmekka: A Space for Dialogue

الصورة
Wednesday the 21st of Feburary

A dedicated member of the Danish Anna Lindh Foundation network has taken the lead in establishing Madmekka, a pioneering initiative designed to empower young individuals with refugee backgrounds or those whose parents have fled. Serving as a beacon of hope and opportunity, Madmekka provides a supportive platform for participants aged 18-30 to explore and access education and job prospects in Denmark.

One of Madmekka's key strengths lies in its comprehensive approach to empowerment. In addition to providing information, the initiative offers mentorship programs, career counseling, and practical workshops, empowering participants to take proactive steps towards realizing their aspirations.

Madmekka stands as a testament to the Danish Anna Lindh Foundation network's unwavering commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowerment within the community. By investing in the potential of young individuals with refugee backgrounds, Madmekka contributes to the creation of a more diverse and resilient society, enriching the social and economic fabric of Denmark.

As they sit together and eat, participants from diverse backgrounds exchange stories, experiences, and laughter, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging. These communal meals serve as more than just a refueling break; they represent a celebration of diversity and unity, where individuals from different walks of life come together to break bread and forge connections that transcend cultural and linguistic barriers.

Through the simple act of sharing a meal, Madmekka reinforces the importance of community, empathy, and understanding. It is in these moments of togetherness that the true spirit of Madmekka shines brightest, as participants come together not just as individuals, but as members of a supportive and inclusive community united in their pursuit of a brighter future in Denmark.
