General Information
The Political Studies Association of Ireland has no staff, and around 300 individual members from across the world. It represents researchers and postgraduate students with an interest in Irish politics, as well as members of the Irish political science community whatever their disciplinary specialize. The PSAI is funded primarily through an annual membership fee, though some additional income derives from its annual conference and from publications. The PSAI holds an annual conference each October; holds an annual postgraduate conference in the Spring; produces a monthly newsletter for members; produces a quarterly academic journal, Irish Political Studies; and has a number of specialist groups open to members who share a particular research interest.
Mission and Objectives

The aim of the Association is to promote the study of politics in and of Ireland. The Association is interested in politics, not simply in Irish politics. It represents the totality of politics as it is taught and researched in Ireland. To this end, the Association supports a number of specialist groups representing a range of disciplinary concerns. The PSAI exists to help bring together researchers interested in Irish politics and those teaching politics in Irish universities.

General Information
REgeneration is a sole-trader company, with collaborations between a number of practitioners and organisations in Ireland, and internationally. REgeneration provides facilitation, training and project development in the youth and community sectors, with a focus on social inclusion, climate justice, youth participation and non-formal education. As a new enterprise, budgetary resources are limited and sources of funding include training and facilitation fees received on a project bases. Partners include Comhlamh, National Youth Council of Ireland and Léargas at a national level, along with Mish Madrasa (Egypt), GREAN Palestine and SCI Jordan.
Mission and Objectives

REgeneration is committed to creating and supporting global education programmes for young people that allows them to understand the complex and interconnected world we live in, to critically engage with challenging issues, and to acquire the skills, attitudes and understanding needed to respond to these challenges. REgeneration believes the enormous challenges presented by climate change, global conflict and social inequality require radical approaches to education in the youth and community sector, and that there must be a focus on marginalised individuals and communities, and the harder-to-reach voices to create a sustainable and equitable approach.
REgeneration is based in Ireland, but working in collaboration with partners around Europe and the Middle East (specifically Palestine, Egypt and Jordan). The objectives of REgeneration include:
• To promote a new approach to climate justice education within the Development Education and Youthwork sectors in Ireland and internationally;
• To facilitate connections and exchange in the Non-Formal Education / Youthwork sphere between organisations in Ireland / EU and the Euromed region;
• To create opportunities for global education projects between Ireland / EU and Euromed Region countries.

Main Projects / Activities

Specific projects in 2015 have included training course delivery for the European Commission agency in Ireland for European volunteers, mentoring support given to an alternative education centre in Cairo, Egypt, and a collaboration with a community-based group, to bring community activists from Palestine to Ireland on an educational exchange. Later in the year, REgeneration will collaborate on further NFE training courses in Europe, as well as a specialised training course in NFE and Youthwork in Jordan in November 2015 (subject to funding).

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Training / Facilitation; Contacts in the Euromed Region; practical knowledge and experience of working on Sustainable Development and NFE in Ireland and the Euromed region.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

I think there is a natural connection between the work of REgeneration and the ALF. As REgeneration is a new entity, it can really benefit from the connection and support of the ALF, but also contribute a huge amount with regards to ideas and resources for growing the work of ALF in Ireland.

UCC is an award-winning institution with a history of independent thinking stretching back over 170 years. UCC is proud to be ranked in the top 1.1% of universities in the world. Our beautiful university opened its gates to just 115 students in 1849. We now have a student population of over 23,000. The School of Applied Social Studies is sited within the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences , providing an educational and research environment which promotes a culture of critical intellectual and practice enquiry in the social sciences based upon participation, inclusion and diversity.

Mission and Objectives

The School of Applied Social Studies’ mission is "to provide an educational environment which promotes a culture of critical intellectual and practice enquiry in the social sciences based upon participation, inclusion and diversity". This mission statement is underpinned by the objective of making equality an integral part of the intellectual, cultural, social and economic life of the University. The School believes that quality is best achieved through the pursuit of equality, based upon the principles of student participation, lifelong learning, community involvement and open access.

Main Projects / Activities

Teaching and Learning Our teaching programmes encompass three broad disciplinary areas: Social Policy Social Work Youth Work and Community Development. Our learning approach emphasizes critical thinking. We want our students to go out into the world ready to ask questions, but also are prepared to innovatively and creatively answer those questions. Through lectures, writing and community engagement, we give students the tools to empower their own futures and become the person they want to be with the necessary skills-set to pursue the career of their choice. Student participation is an essential part of the School's teaching and learning environment. Teaching methods encourage maximum student participation and include lectures, seminars, fieldwork, group and individual tutorials, group work, projects, meetings, workshops, practical exercises and written work. Research The School has a very active research community including academics and students at all levels. Many of the staff are affiliated to the Institute of the Social Sciences for the 21st Century (ISS21) working collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries on a variety of funded research projects and individual studies. A substantial volume of books, articles and reports have been produced by staff over the past five years. Approximately €2 million has been won by staff from Irish and European grants. Public Engagement and Community Involvement Many of the staff are involved in civil society working actively in the voluntary and community sector. Through the 'Science Shop' initiative, projects, placements and volunteering students play an active part in the community. Staff are also engaged in adult and community education in Cork and its environs. Diversity, Access and Widening Participation The School of Applied Social Studies is committed to promoting diversity through widening participation as part of the multicultural reality of Ireland in the 21st Century. We start from the premise that each person is unique. Our being different is what makes us unique as human beings. The School’s programmes seek to promote curiosity and appreciation of what is different, with a view to opening up new worlds of understanding to the learner. We value differences in class, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ideological beliefs and ability as the most valuable asset of the University. In all our programmes, diversity is valued as an important source of intellectual enrichment and personal development. Fourth Level and Graduate Education Programmes The School of Applied Social Studies has a very strong record at Fourth Level, guided by its philosophy of lifelong learning. In 2007, the School (in collaboration with the Sociology Dept.) was awarded €919,000 to develop its Graduate Research Education Programme under the PRTLI4 scheme. The School also offers a range of taught programmes including a D.Soc.Sc. “Practitioner Doctorate”; the MSW programme (100 students), an MSocSc in Social Policy; an M.Plan (Planning and Sustainable Development) with the Schools of Geography and Sociology (60 students). The School co-ordinates the part-time MSocSc in Third Sector Management which it teaches along with six other University Schools namely: Management and Marketing, Government, Economics, Food Business and Development, Law, and Accounting, Finance and Information Systems.

Shadows: young people dealing with conflict

Communities in Ireland are increasingly divided. Many young migrants have experienced armed conflict, endured long and complicated journeys prior to their arrival and now they face racism, institutional discrimination, identity issues, cultural and intergenerational clashes as they struggle to find...

Shared Island Youth Forum - The National Youth Council of Ireland

الصورة

Shared Island Youth Forum

Cross border collaboration is central to the maintenance of dialogue and peace on the island of Ireland. The Shared Island series of such dialogue was established by the Irish Department of the Taoiseach in partnership with one of our grassroots member the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) and Youth Action Northern Ireland (YANI).

Fostering inclusive civic dialogue about a shared future on the island of Ireland and opportunities for deepening cooperation and connections through the Good Friday Agreement is crucial to this work.

The Shared Island Youth Forum brings together 80 young people aged 18 to 25 who will meet in a deliberative process over the 2024 to set out their vision and values for a shared future on the island of Ireland under a number of themes.

The forum is currently recruiting additional members and seeking nominees through youth and civic society organisations. Nominees are required to be between 18 and 25 years of age and currently a resident of Ireland or Northern Ireland. The scheduled meetings of the Shared Island Youth Form focus on the themes of Opportunity, Wellbeing, Culture and Identity, and Equality, and will take place on the dates below:

  • 26 January (Dublin)
  • 8 March (Belfast)
  • 26 April (Dublin)
  • Additional dates and locations to be confirmed.

You can hear from the members of the Youth Forum themselves in this video of the launch of the Shared Island Youth Forum here.

The most recent meeting in January 2024 involved activities, small group discussions and a panel discussion with Dermot Devlin (My Way Access), Dr Joseph Morning (Spun Out), and Danielle McKenna (Rialto Youth Project) which was moderated by Ines, a forum participant. This event offered the young people the chance to explore the theme of “Wellbeing”, and how positive change can be achieved together, addressing the sub-themes of mental health, disability, trans-gender healthcare, and community healthcare.

Why is this forum important for Ireland and Northern Ireland? Crucially, the diversity of the island today is well-represented in the Youth Forum with 40 members from Ireland, 40 from Northern Ireland, and a broad base of gender, ethnic, community, faith and other identity diversities. It is vital that young people are central to discussions on how we share the island across all communities in the years ahead. https://www.youth.ie/articles/launch-of-new-shared-island-youth-forum/
