General Information

Sidreh is a key player in the development of the Bedouin community of the Negev, and we have become a key representative of the Bedouin woman’s voice. The organisation is a registered NGO, governed by a board and with concrete project work carried out by nine core staff members. We are funded by grant income from institutional donors, including the EU and USAID, and we have an average annual budget of c.$350,000. Sidreh is the only organisation with a special focus on reaching women in unrecognised villages across the Negev. These villages are not recognised by the government, they are not provided with basic services such as running water, sanitation, paved roads, electricity or gas, and because of their legal status, they are subject to a policy of demolition and destruction. We partner with local women in the unrecognised villages and local NGOs that share our feminist values. We see the empowerment of women as a strategic goal for the sustainable development of local Bedouin communities in the Negev.

Mission and Objectives

Sidreh’s mission is to support the Arab-Bedouin woman in the Negev in her pursuit of the full realisation of her rights and entitlements as well as those of her community. To realise this Sidreh focuses its work on four main strategic objectives:
• Access to knowledge: Improving educational levels of Bedouin women.
• Access to resources: Increasing the skills and income of Bedouin women.
• Gender equality and participation: Improving women’s social positions and advancing women’s rights.
• Sustainable development: professionalisation and organisational development.

Main Projects / Activities

The Education Programme ensures women and adolescents can acquire skills and gain new knowledge and awareness that improves both their daily lives and that of their communities, while enlarging their scope of involvement in the community. We have more than 20 years of field experience and have developed a curriculum and methodology recognised by the Ministry of Education. This enables women to receive an official high school equivalency certificate, and we have helped more than 2,700 adult women learn to read and write and more than 200 women have completed high school through our activities, with many continuing to higher education.

The goal of the Empowerment and Participation programme is to promote gender equality, strengthen the collective voice of women and their meaningful participation in all spheres of life, and the realisation of their rights. Since the programme was established, more than 2,000 women have participated in leadership and rights awareness programmes; we have built the first Women’s Centre in an unrecognized village serving more than 90 women; and the programme has also built the skills of over 400 local women leaders and advocates.

The goal of the Economic Development Programme is to ensure Bedouin women in the Negev acquire skills to become entrepreneurs or can join the labour market and have access to a stable income. The programme has resulted in 120 women gaining the tools to ensure the optimisation of spending, benefits and savings by boosting their financial literacy, allowing them to incorporate financial planning strategies in their households; 115 women have developed entrepreneurial skills and expanded or established a small business; and 650 women, children, and men as well as 80 volunteers have benefitted from the innovative Desert Gardens’ Project, launched in 2013.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Sidreh is a Bedouin women's organisation, run by Bedouin women from the community, therefore we are truly part of the community we serve. We have a deep knowledge of the cultural and social intricacies of Bedouin society, and strong personal and professional awareness of the context of Bedouin women. Our extensive experience and expertise in working with Bedouin women in recognised and unrecognised villages in the fields of education, economic development, media, advocacy, participation, gender equality, and empowerment demonstrates the breadth of our work and the depth of our knowledge in seeing these issues with a gender perspective in our society. We have a unique understanding of the community and we are able to gain access to some of the most vulnerable in our society, and present issues from a perspective that other organisations and institutes would not be able to. Furthermore, Sidreh has grown with steady organisational development year on year, and a key factor to this development is the trust, respect, and support we have gained from the wider Bedouin society. Therefore, we are able to contribute the unique and strong voice of Bedouin women, to bring this group to the wider community of Mediterranean civil society engagement and cooperation, and to bring new perspectives from women from a traditional society that will present our values and cultural heritage. This will increase the pluralism of the network, increase its reach to those who have typically been marginalised within their own and the wider society, and increase the breadth of opportunities for greater engagement and inclusion for network members.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Sidreh would like to join the ALF Network to increase our engagement with civil society actors across the Mediterranean region, to learn from network members, and to share our knowledge and insights into Bedouin culture and our civil society work. Sidreh would like to become actively involved with the network with a particular view to increase our engagement working on women’s rights and gender equality, and to gain insights from other actors across the region who are working on these issues. We feel this will strengthen our association and increase the number of Bedouin women involved in civil society engagement, it will strengthen our role working on gender equality in Israeli society, and broaden our awareness of how to ensure relevant international legislation, such as CEDAW, is effectively applied to Israeli legislation for the benefit of women from minority communities. So essentially, shared knowledge and increased engagement are our initial interests in joining the ALF Network. Over time, as we become more associated with the network, we would like to develop project partnerships to expand our work in breadth and impact, to gain greater resources to achieve our aims of gender equality and to help others do the same, and to get more groups who would not normally consider gender equality a core issue for them talking about the issues. We would be happy to hold discussions with potential future partners on the broad range of gender rights issues how to use Sidreh’s work in their future media work.

Mission and Objectives

Sindyanna main task is to build bridges between the two people living in Israel – Jews and Arabs. Its mission is to make peace in the Middle East through real economic empowerment and work opportunity.
Sindyanna believes that improving living standard through fair trade activity can strengthen the influence of the Arab community inside Israel and especially the Arab women, and hence will strengthen the struggle for peace, social justice and equality.
Our projects are implemented by Arab and Jewish collaboration. Arab community in Israel is segregated from Jewish community and there is little communication between them. Sindyanna succeeds in creating interaction between Arab and Jewish people through its fair trade activity. The action of Sindyanna contributes to create positive communication and to reduce the wall dividing the Israeli society. Our final goal is to build a just society from the grass roots level through economic empowerment of the marginalized communities.

Main Projects / Activities

Sindyanna runs a Visitor Center in one of the poorest Arab villages named Kufr Manda in the Galilee (northern part of Israel), where Arab and Jewish people can meet and create a constractive dialogue. Sindyanna's women team teaches traditional basket weaving to Arab and Jewish women, and encourage Arab women to assist their family economy. Our palm frond baskets reproduce traditional Arab basketry, which is based on olive and mastic branches. The fronds are especially strong and durable, and create a unique, attractive and authentic look.
Sindyanna also contributes to the development of Arab agriculture by planting olive groves on deserted Arab lands and help develop a modern and self sustainable economy for Arab farmers inside Israel

  1. Media
General Information

Social TV (ISTV) is an independent, non-profit media organization that engages the Israeli and international public through thought-provoking, critical video articles on complex social issues across Israel and Palestine. We disrupt the status quo by producing and distributing video articles that offer the public an up-close, unseen view of social phenomena that the Israeli mainstream media refuses to cover. Social TV has three employees, several freelancers, and volunteers. We are generously supported by several international Foundations and Organizations in the fields of human rights and media, and work in tandem with other human-rights organizations in Israel/Palestine. Our annual budget is in the area of £234,000.

Mission and Objectives

Social TV exists as both a stage and microphone for those most affected by issues of poverty, the occupation, militarism, and more. Our hard-hitting video articles facilitate discourse on the intersection of various systems of oppression and the unjust social order that thrives within Israel. Social TV is proud to mobilize everyday people into activists and change makers. We reframe complex social phenomena of Israel and Palestine into accessible video articles--providing critical analyses as opposed to one-sided narratives perpetuated by Israeli mainstream media. Our team of activists believe that alternative media is a tool of progressive struggle--necessary for awakening public consciousness and radical social change. We mobilize everyday people into activists and change-makers. In 2020, our video articles reached 4,000,000 exposures and 25,000 direct interactions with viewers. Our main focus is on democratic values and human rights, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, poverty and food insecurity, and other social issues in Israel/Palestine.

Main Projects / Activities

In the coming year of activity (2022) we intend to deal with four core issues: Militarism in Israeli society; Poverty, hunger, and food insecurity in Israel; Hope Hub: Rewriting a Jewish/Palestinian Narrative in Shared Cities Through Media; and a sequence of current articles on core issues.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Social TV is undergoing an organizational renewal. Going forward, one of our primary organizational goals is to motivate language-based solutions and emotional, human, authentic reflection in the context of relationships between Jewish-Israelis and Palestinian citizens of Israel in Israel/Palestine. In May and April of 2021, Israel’s shared/”mixed” cities saw widespread clashes between Palestinian citizens of Israel and Jewish-Israelis--the most violent outbreak in two decades. Understanding that we can no longer neglect addressing the long-standing tensions, Social TV, drawing on its expertise in telling complex stories and our close relationships with activists on the ground, created Hope Hub. Behind our expertise are proven methods that produce multi-layered content based on limited staff alongside and mostly volunteers. Our resume attests to our ability and experience in training hundreds of social activists as independent video reporters, as demonstrated by our successful ‘Peace Journalism’ program in conjunction with the European Union and Adam Institute. We believe we can contribute to the Network in Israel/Palestine by sharing our vast experience with partner organizations and collaborating with others to create

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Because of our 15 years of experience leading the production of video articles promoting human rights, equality, and peace in Israel, we believe joining the ALF Network would allow us to continue learning and tailoring our projects to extend our reach to our intended audience. Hope Hub is a process that is unique, innovative, and the first of its kind. No other organization has the same ability to carry out a project that brings together elements of videography, complex-storytelling, narrative building, and direct involvement of activists. To the best of our knowledge, there exists no other project which builds joint narrative through video production as a tool for creating a model of shared life. Social TV is uniquely qualified to carry out such a project given our 15 years of experience leading in the production of video articles promoting human rights, equality, and peace in Israel.

Strengthening Interfaith and Community Connections Between Jewish and Arab Schools in the Galilee

الصورة
PICTURE Galilee Dreamers Yarka

Galilee Dreamers, an active member of the Anna Lindh Foundation Israeli Network, fosters connections between students from Jewish and Arab schools in the Galilee. This program, run by Oranim International at Oranim College, brings together high school students, teachers, and teachers-in-training to promote a shared society. Students collaborate locally and travel abroad to embrace and exchange their cultures. Galilee Dreamers promotes hope, tolerance, and diversity appreciation, shaping a future where cultural differences are celebrated.

In March, Assif School in Misgav and Achava Comprehensive School in the Druze village of Yarka held a joint event with 40 students. Highlights included a tour of the Druze School, cultural insights from Druze students, heartfelt activities led by Principal Shafik Abed, and an amazing shared meal of local Druze cuisine. Playing sports together and celebrating a birthday further strengthened bonds.

Galilee Dreamers continue to foster cross-cultural exchanges, promoting inclusivity and equal rights. These initiatives combat prejudices, nurture global citizenship, and promote collaborative efforts for a shared society in the Galilee and beyond.

We continue to plant "seeds of hope" by fostering these valuable cross-cultural exchanges between Jewish and Arab students in the region. We commend the school principals and educational staff for their efforts in organizing these impactful meetings.
