Treasured Trash is a 10 months community development project through artistic recycling planned and implemented by Darb 1718 Contemporary Art & Culture Center (Cairo) in partnership with Raaderum Office for Contemporary Art (Denmark) and Esterni (Italy). Starting in 2014, an Egyptian community residing in Fustat, Old Cairo will engage in a democratic discussion on the concept of “trash” and will receive free training in recycling art by expert artists from Egypt and abroad. The project changes behavior regarding trash disposal for the better and to achieve this, we have chosen to apply The Fun Theory: “the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better”.
Treasured Trash addresses the perception of trash, its possible value and the role of recycled art as both an active agent and a source of inspiration for the participating community. The project is a reconceptualization of what trash is, what is truly wasted, how we can deal with it as a community and transform it into something of value and beauty.
The aim is to bring the community together to discuss, work together and solve some of the problems that afflict Fustat. By approaching these problems in a fun way with exciting activities, a change of attitude, awareness and positive results will be achieved. We aim to offer training opportunities to generate income and improve their livelihoods.
