Main Projects / Activities

Al-Qalam is a youth-led social enterprise started in 2015 with the aim to promote and preserve Arabic calligraphy and Islamic Ornaments in the heart of Historic Cairo in a unique historical environment. It serves as an exhibition and learning space, a design studio, a shop selling calligraphy supplies and art gifts, and a meeting point for creators and artists.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Al-Qalam will gladly offer to share its space as a hosting organisation with other communities/entities of the local networks when possible, taking timeline constraints and space availability into consideration. This may include but is not limited to hosting art residency programmes, meetings, workshops, seminars, art exhibitions, talks and training and sessions on arts and culture, especially those relevant to the local art scene.
This social enterprise is located in a listed building with high historical significance in the heart of Islamic Cairo. It overlooks the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan and Rifai mosque and is about three minutes from Cairo Citadel.

Al-Qalam possesses a well-equipped small studio to document and produce adequate audio-video content. This entails lighting units, microphones, tripods, camera sets, and lenses. We are delighted to share those resources upon the previous agreement of both parties at reduced and affordable rates.

Besides, the hub is a network of a diverse group of calligraphers, researchers, artisans, handicraftsmen, photographers, jewellery designers and programmers involved with the arts of Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation and their applications in daily life. We would assist and facilitate establishing networks of this group and all interested local networks of ALF, as well as sharing opportunities of local funds and grant opportunities with them.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Al-Qalam is hoping to utilise the network of ALF in the local and Mediterranean regions to establish a dialogue on Arabic calligraphy and its applications, traditional and contemporary, in daily life. In the broader sense, we aim to investigate the relevance of arts and culture in producing knowledge and mitigating vulnerabilities.

General Information
The current number of employees is 45. We are currently working in nine governorates with different partners. We have six branches in Cairo. The budget for 2011 was about 5 million Egyptian Pounds. Our sources of funding differ between international, regional, Egyptian foundations, private companies, individual donations and social ventures. Our main partners include Drosos Foundation, JP Morgan, Sawiris foundation, British Petroleum and the International Youth Foundation. We take action through concrete projects.
Mission and Objectives

Our aspiration in AYB-SD is to create an economically independent society and promote youth engagement in sustainable development through creating innovative regional models.
AYB-SD is committed to the economic empowerment of the youth in underprivileged communities. The organization offers training, personal coaching, formal employment opportunities, and loans, while striving to promote volunteerism in community development and fostering private and public partnerships.

Main Projects / Activities

Our main aim is to eradicate poverty through the economic empowerment of people living under the poverty line and apply the concept of sustainable development rather than charity. Our activities include trainings for employment for the marginalized women and youth, as well as giving micro and small loans to them. On the other hand we give education and awareness programs for the teens in order to accomplish a comprehensive family based developmental model. We also have the franchise system in 13 universities around Egypt to empower the youth to carry out developmental projects by themselves where we only give them the necessary guidance. Because we believe that these youth are the real change agents in any society.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Alf network is an already experienced network that facilitates the cooperation between the Egyptian NGOs and helps them take joint action. In AYB-SD we believe strongly in the effectiveness of such work and we encourage it and have worked many times through joint partnerships with different local NGOs.
If accepted we will abide by the rules of the network and do our best to disseminate the values of ALF. Through becoming part of this network we will be able to better serve the Egyptian youth in the marginalized areas and promote the culture of peace and dialogue among them.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

One of the main focus points of ALF is the development of the youth. AYB-SD's main target group is the Egyptian youth in underprivileged areas. Through certain educational trainings on life skills, vocational and specialized skills, we help the youth to find their potentials and help them find a suitable job. We also have a unique franchise system across different universities all over Egypt where the youth take the developmental model of AYB-SD and apply it in different areas.
We are looking forward to become a member so that we could do partnerships with different entities including NGOs, public institutions, foundations, local and regional authorities, individuals and private organizations in the Mediterranean region and also to apply to ALF activities and grant schemes and to shape the work of the ALF National Network. Last but not least to post our projects ideas and look for partners inside the network to support and develop them.

Mission and Objectives

ACAF - Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum is an independent organisation that functions as an alternative venue for the presentation and research of contemporary visual culture, both local and international. It is dedicated to exhibiting high quality contemporary art whilst not forgetting its educational role towards both "the artists of tomorrow" and the audience. ACAF works at the grassroots level to promote contemporary art in Alexandria and Egypt. The Forum aims to stimulate the emergence of a new generation of artists and to advance awareness, education and appreciation of contemporary visual culture in a non-commercial way.
