Işık University's mission is to be an academically sound institution providing a comprehensive undergraduate education that responds to the needs of a changing world. It also offers selectively focused graduate programs that lend support both to research and to undergraduate education. Işık University is aware of the significance of rendering community service. We are planning to establish a research center focusing on issues of local development in Şile. A group of faculty members have already started brainstorming activities with members of the Şile community to develop ideas. We offer a course titled ‘Community Involvement’ where the students learn about the theory and practice of community service and civic involvement through specific projects targeting the Şile community.
Currently we are cooperating with University of Granada and the Euro-Arab Foundation in Spain to develop a proposal to be submitted to Anna Lindh Foundation. We aim to investigate the mutual perceptions of young Muslims and non-Muslims in the Spanish society. The research aims to develop a multilevel action plan-national, regional, and local- to reduce as much as possible the stereotypes and preconceived notions about “the other” and construct platforms of mutual understanding and knowledge.
