In Place of War (IPOW) is an organisation based within the University of Manchester and researches creativity in sites of armed conflict and has, over the past 7 years, developed extensive international networks of creative artists making theatre, street art, music, spoken word and more in response to war. All our work has been about (i) promoting the work of artists who have minimal access to international audiences (ii) demonstrating the significance of the arts to wider society (iii) demonstrating the value of arts research to public debates on key issues of the day. We have a digital platform enabling artists to share their creative responses to conflict here: www.inplaceofwar.net.
To represent the stories of artists from sites of conflict, revolution and marginalised communities across the world through a range of activities, including the mobility of artists, documenting and sharing work on and offline and bringing organisations together to share their practice.
Our digital platform is a unique online space where artists can share work, exchange best practice and gain access to opportunities on an international scale.
For 10 years we have been at the forefront of academic research that explores the forms, roles and impact of creativity in sites of war, revolution and conflict.
Our ground-breaking Creative Entrepreneurial Programme is empowering the world’s most marginalised communities to create sustainable income and social change through their creativity.
We support a range of on-the-ground partners who are developing creative spaces for their communities in some of the world’s most challenging places.
We produce, curate and present creative projects featuring some of the world’s most innovative artists for clients including Shambala Festival, Upper Space and Imperial War Museum North.
