The Digital Services Act (DSA) entered into force in February 2024. Marking a pivotal moment in EU leadership on online content regulation. The DSA shifts EU strategy on combating hate speech towards a proactive paradigm by giving the Commission oversight over cooperation between social media platforms and other key actors alongside powers to fine platforms and scrutinize Social Media algorithms.

New responsibilities for online platforms have been imposed, and specific roles including National Digital Services Coordinators (DSCs) and Trusted Flaggers have been created. Building on its predecessors, the Code of Conduct on countering illegal hate speech online and the E-Commerce Directive, the DSA holds platforms accountable for user-generated content if they fail to take action against illegal hate speech after being notified of it.

Set up in 2011 by a group of NGOs led by CEJI – a Jewish Contribution to an Inclusive Europe, Facing Facts is an innovative programme and network aiming to tackle the issue of hate crime and hate speech.
