New Europeans is a membership organisation set up to "empower the EU citizens of today and the "new Europeans" of tomorrow. We do this through education and training, research and campaigns.
I would like to present our Together in Europe project, which worked with migrant communities in three European cities, namely, London, Warsaw and Berlin. We examined the way in which European citizenship and the rights to non-discrimination that come with free movement in Europe can be a resource not just for individual migrants, but also for whole communities by developing a stronger sense of cohesion and social justice. We showed how migrants themselves can change the public narrative.
We are working on a project with trade unions, migrant organisations and other civil society actors to counter hate crime and racially motivated incidents. We intend to reach out to a broader Europe-wide coalition to take forward this work, including the Association for the Defence of Human Rights in Europe and Solidar. We wish to strengthen our links with organisations working with migrants and refugees In the EU and we will be opening branches in Italy. The project involves awareness-training about what constitutes a hate crime or a racist incident, signposting where to get help and encouraging voice,self-confidence and assertiveness in BME communities. We believe this work of empowerment is a key driver of social change and development.
