General Information
European Movement – Latvia, founded in 1997, is one of the biggest and most influential NGOs in Latvia working in the political sphere. The EML has above 700 members (incl. 4 active legal entities). The EML is a member of the European Movement International
Mission and Objectives

EML works in order to:
     -improve representation of Latvia’s interests in the EU and cooperation with other European countries,
     -foster European awareness in Latvia,
     -and to support civil society and its participation in decision-making both in Latvia and in Europe (incl. neighbourhood and development cooperation).

Main Projects / Activities

Regular activities throughout the year:
-newsletter on Latvia in the EU and EU neighbourhood
-lectures in schools and universities on EU and its neighbourhood
-interviews on EU related issues (incl. migration) (2015 more than 80 interviews, leading to more than 200 publications where given)
-meetings with NGOs, decision makers and leading civil servants on Latvia's EU and foreign policy
-participation in the NGO and Government Cooperation Council and the NGO and Saeima Forum coordination team

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

The EML has a newsletter published every two weeks reaching out to more than 2000 opinion leaders from politics, civil service, NGOs etc. and more than 2000 followers on social media. These tools have and will be used for spreading information where ALF and EML goals match.
The EML is member of the NGO and Government Cooperation Council and the NGO and Saeima Forum Coordination Team. The EML is fully fledged and active member of the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation (LAPAS), the Latvian Civic Alliance and the European Movement - International.
The EML regularly provides answers on EU related issues (including migration policies, neighbourhood etc.) to media.
Additional cooperation possibilities in relation with the above mentioned activities can be discussed/considered.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

The EML has participated in the past years in several ALF events in Latvia.
The EML and the EM-International network have been active in the EU neighbourhood since its establishment.
Since the recently signed memorandum with the ministry of education, the EML is eager to exchange best practice in citizenship and active citizenship education, democracy etc. with Israel and other countries with significant experience in these issues. In addition, the growing interest and importance of migration issues in Latvia and the EU are an additional source for motivation to apply for membership and to be part of the information exchange in the network.

Embassy is a non-profit NGO founded on April 1, 2005 in Riga, Latvia. We are working on intercultural dialogue projects like CulturePub (2010), BalticJapan Magazine (since 2009), 1001 actions for dialogue campagn activity in Riga (2006), Nihongo.lv (2002-2006). General Information
Non governmental growing organization with volunteers and 2 paid workers. Budgetary resources for now is very small (only European projects funding)because we are working only 2nd year. We are realizing project "I see" in Youth in Action programme, we are making seminars for blind people to learn. And our main partners are municipalities, other organizations which are working for blind people in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Mission and Objectives

The organization’s work is mostly related to integration of visually impaired children and young people into community and society: the organization is looking for better ways and methods to demonstrate to society and to the visually impaired people themselves their opportunities and great potential for contribution.
The process of educational and social integration of visually impaired young people makes use of the experience of Western and Eastern countries, as well as that of Latvia. The opportunities for everyone to fulfill their dreams and use their individual talents to the utmost are equally important.
Another objective of the organization is advocating the right of visually impaired people to fully participate in public life, including such areas as education, employment, right to an accessible environment, as well as their rights to participate in various cultural activities.

Main Projects / Activities

The main latest project for now is directly aimed at creating equal participation opportunities for visually impaired young people in the education system and the job market. Active participation, inclusion and mutual solidarity will be advanced as well.
Since the project is international (Latvia and France participating), the participation of young people in developing a European democracy and cooperation concerning youth issues will be advanced as well.
The themes are worked out to facilitate cultural exchange and popularization of a healthy lifestyle.

General Information

European Movement – Latvia, founded in 1997, is one of the biggest and most influential NGOs in Latvia working in the political sphere. EML works in order to to support civil society development and its participation in EU related decision-making both in Latvia and in Europe improve representation of Latvia’s and its civil society interests in the EU and cooperation with other European countries, European Neighbourhood and Developing Countries foster European awareness and values in Latvia

Mission and Objectives

The EML has approx 700 members (private persons and legal entities). The anual congress is the highest decision making body. The congress elects a board consisting of 9 persons incl. president and vice president, who are in charge for the implementation of the work programme. The work of the non-payed board is supported by office employees and volunteers. Currently 2 full time project managers, 1 full time volunteer, 1 bookkeeper, approx. 5-10 volunteers working on specific projects.  The EML finances (approx. 60 000 EUR in 2015) are based on membership fees, donations, projects and service contracts. Income sources are diverted and no specific dominance of a certain donor can be identified. Main projects 2015: EML hosts a volunteer through the Erasmus+ programme, has a 3 year project from the Socitey Integreation Foundation on administrative costs and basic activities (finishing Dec. 2015), Integration projects with the Ministry of Culture, Service contracts (Mobile express with discussions in Schools, EU information provider Forum etc.) with the European Commission in Latvia and the European Parliament. Main partners Institutional Partners: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Parliament (especially European Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Social and Education Committees), Ministry of Education and its Agencies, Ministry of Culture, Agency Jaunatnes Starptautisko programmu aģentūra. Non-institutional: NGO and Government Cooperation Council and its member organistations (EML is elected member of the Council), NGO and Parliament cooperataion Forum team (elected member), Civic Alliance Latvia (founding member), Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation (LAPAS) (Founding member), European Movement International ((member).

Main Projects / Activities

The EML regularly carries out greater and smaller projects, some of which are already a trademark of the organization, as well as various non-project activities. Examples are: – European of the Year in Latvia – project dating back to 1998, with a public vote for the person who has most contributed to strengthening links between Latvia and the rest of Europe. The contest has attracted wide public and media attention. Prominent people from different fields hold the title, including former President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, singers Renārs Kaupers and Marija Naumova, current EU Development Commissionner Andris Piebalgs, etc. – Europe Day. The EML started the tradition celebrating the Europe Day in Latvia back in 1998 together with youth organization Club “The House” – Youth for United Europe. The EML not only assists in preparing and takes part in the EU festivities in Vērmanes Garden (Rīga), but also organizes public events in the regions as well as high-level discussions, conferences and receptions. – European Voluntary Service (EVS) and promotion of the European Year of Volunteering in schools. Since 2008, the EML is an accredited EVS sending organization, but a hosting organization already since 2006. So far EML has hosted five international volunteers and has sent more than 25 Latvian volunteers to other European countries. The EML actively promotes the program at various youth events, and in 2010-2011 it also carried out a series of presentations on volunteerism and EVS in more than 50 regional schools. – Work with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).  A particular priority for the EML is fully implementing Article 11 of the Treaty on European Union. – Strengthening civil society in Latvia. The EML stands for strong and active civil society as well as open and democratic public governance. The EML, often in cooperation with other civil society partners, has already achieved several improvements in existing mechanisms of participation. Now a top priority is developing and implementing a new, unified model (mechanism) of civic participation which would encompass regional, national and EU/international levels. The work has been underway since 2009, with the EML being constantly involved at the highest level. The EML sustains cooperation with the Saeima (Parliament), the Cabinet of Ministers and the State Chancellery, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Science (national coordinator of the European Year of Volunteering) and other governance institutions, as well as with the European Parliament Information Office in Latvia and the Representation of the European Commission in Latvia. – Information activities. The EML regularly publishes news and updates on its webpage, as well as electronically distributes its weekly newsletter (more than 2 300 recipients). The organization cooperates with Latvian and foreign mass media, takes part in and organizes public events, etc.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

The EML has a Newsletter published every second week and reaching out to more than 2500 opinion leaders in Latvia, including NGOs, civil servants, decision makers and multipliers. The EML has strong interests in promoting democratic values and share experience with other partners incl. in less privilaged regions and countries. The EML, thourhg its work in the NGO and Government Cooperation Council and the NGO and Parliament Cooperation Forum has great cooperation with a wide NGO sector and others, which can be of use for the joint values covering EML and the Network.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

The EML has followed the work of the ALF Network for several years. Participation in ALF related events is a regular activity for the EML. With an increasing challanges for the EU, Europe and its neighbours an increased cooperation is needed to solve joint challanges and to contribute to a sustainable, peaceful and democratic continent and world which is based on human dignity. The membership in the ALF Network can be an additional tool in information exchange and joint project design for the above mentioned aims.

FEJS Latvija is a non-profit independent organization dedicated to the exchange of information and networking among young media makers, journalism students, or professionals and citizens interested in journalism. It was created as a national organization of Forum for European Journalism Students (FEJS). FEJS Latvija acquires funding on project basis from various funds and sponsorships. FEJS Latvija is active in many ways increasing awareness about main tendencies and problems in Latvian media and encouraging journalism students and media makers to take active part in civil society, promoting independent and ethical journalism. FEJS Latvija organizes discussions with Latvian and foreign journalists on latest media development tendencies and opportunities for young journalists to enter the labour market, seminars and workshops for acquiring new journalistic skills and competences, article competitions for young journalists and other media related events. It also informs about local and international journalism conferences, seminars, trainings, competitions and traineeships. FEJS Latvija is member organization of European Youth Press - a largest umbrella organization for young European media makers.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of FEJS Latvija is to offer an opportunity for young journalists to develop their professional skills and get new knowledge and international experience, thus improving journalism quality in Latvia on long term basis. The objectives of FEJS Latvija are: Unite young people interested in media (young journalists, journalism students, highschoolk students) thus implementing common goals and creating a sustainable network. Enhance the knowledge about media, improve the skills of young journalists using both formal and informal methods. Develop interaction between journalism students and professional media environment thus fostering young journalists enter labour market. Invite young journalists for a public discussion about current journalism tendencies and problems and encourage young journalists follow the processes in the society. Promote and support the initiatives of young journalists on the local, national and international level thus creating conditions for their intellectual and creative development. Foster the mobility of Latvian journalism students and young journalists, inform them about international opportunities for enhancing their knowledge, as well as promote intercultural education.

Main Projects / Activities

The main activities of FEJS Latvija are: 1) Regular discussions with local or foreign journalists/experts about recent media trends and problems. 2) Workshops for young journalists and media makers in order to enhance their journalistic skills and competences, for example, media simulation game. 3) Competitions (for example, article competition) for young journalists to practise their journalistic skills and competences 4) Exchange projects and study visits with our partner organizations to foster intercultural dialogue and provide Latvian journalists with international background and skills. 5) Informing young Latvian media makers about national and international opportunities in media field (trainings, exchange projects, workshops, internships, contests etc.)

FONDS SABIEDRIBAI (Fund for Society) is a new and active organisation, our team consists of 6 members. We are working with EU financed projects in educational, social and youth programmes. We are creating international projects with partners from different countries. Our projects are about education for young people and people at risk.
Mission and Objectives

Our aims are:
- education, science and culture encouragement;
- charity;
- sport support;
- protection of the environment and cultural monuments;
- raising social welfare and improvement of living conditions of the poor and socially disadvantaged groups of people.

Main Projects / Activities

The project "LET'S DO IT BETTER" (Grundtvig partnerships, we are partners, budget 10 000 EUR) aims to improve the quality of teaching in order to strengthen integration processes in society and the labor market among learners. These tasks, although different in every organisation, contribute to eliminate the problem of social exclusion.
Through a multilateral exchange of experience, we plan to improve the quality of our services for students as representative part of various social groups. The project aims to propose and promote popular not-formal education as a tool for target group's empowerment in order to eliminate social exclusion.
Our goal is to learn from each other and share best practices, working in partners’ own country and during international meetings.
Project partners are from: Italy, Turkey, Greece, Spain and France.

General Information

“Kino Bize” is a small indie movie theater located in the center of Riga, Latvia. The theater’ s programming embraces challenging, vibrant and independently produced films and videos as well as thematically programmed retrospection and special events. “Kino Bize” is run as a non-profit organization with 35 seats and three to four screenings every day. The budgetary includes both income from film screenings and special grants. The staff includes director, project manager and three administrators. “Kino Bize” is based and related with "Kanepes Culture Center" that is a new performing arts venue, café and music/ social place in Riga. It is occupied by a new “fiery” concert hall, cozy kitchen, summer terrace and the movie theater.

Mission and Objectives

1) encourage and support the work of art audiovisual distribution, development and becoming; 2) promote the audiovisual cultural education in Latvia; 3) establish and maintain a public available inventory of audiovisual materials

Main Projects / Activities

International film screenings; Film festivals and special events; Interdisciplinary project development; Educational work in audiovisual area - seminars, training, student work screenings; Social activity program - public discussions to promote the civic participation; Equipment and services for rent.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

"Kino Bize" as a movie theater offers the direct services for screenings of movies and videos, as well as works as an intermediary between other members of the network and film distributors to complete their activities with related audiovisual material.
