General Information
The History of WWOOF Originally called “Working Weekends on Organic Farms”, WWOOF came into being in England, in Autumn 1971, when Sue Coppard, a secretary living and working in London, recognised the need for people like herself,  who did not have the means or the opportunity, to access the countryside and support the organic movement. Her idea started with a trial working weekend for four people at a bio dynamic farm at Emerson College in Sussex, arranged through a contact in the Soil Association. The weekend was a great success and things gathered momentum very quickly. Soon many more organic farmers and smallholders were willing to host people keen to work on their farms in return for food and accommodation (WWOOFers). Hosts and WWOOFers made new friends and enjoyed the experience of exchanging assistance and knowledge. Where it all started WWOOF UK developed quickly with the organisation adapting its systems to meet the needs of WWOOFers and hosts. It remains flexible and adaptable and continues to benefit greatly from enthusiastic grassroots input and feedback. Offers of help from members are actively encouraged. All suggestions are aired and discussed and many implemented. WWOOF's ethos is one of evolution and constant improvement. Now there are autonomous WWOOF organisations in many countries; all of whom have their own ways of organising themselves. However they all have similar aims. Hosts in countries without a national group are listed by WWOOF Independents. A maturing organization In the year 2000 the first International WWOOF conference was held with representatives from 15 countries. It was agreed to: Develop guidelines as to what is meant by being a WWOOFer, a WWOOF host and to go WWOOFing. Encourage and support emerging WWOOF organisations in developing countries. The present In the last few years many new WWOOF organisations have been created with the help and support of existing WWOOF groups so that in 2012 there are more than 50 WWOOF groups world wide. When the demand for longer periods on farms occurred, the name was changed from "Working Weekends on Organic Farms" to "Willing Workers On Organic Farms". However the use of the word “work” in the title caused problems in some regions as the organisation became inappropriately connected with migrant work and viewed as a clandestine migrant worker organisation. As a result of this – and in recognition of the world wide nature of the organisation we have become "World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms". This change of name was accepted at the meeting in the year 2000, though some WWOOF groups still prefer to use old versions of the name. By sharing the experience of countries that have successfully negotiated national recognition of WWOOF as a bone fide cultural exchange and learning experience it is hoped that national organisations still having problems with their immigration authorities will be able to influence change. The advantages of acting together on the world stage has become more and more important for WWOOF groups over the years and at another international meeting in Korea in 2011 it was agreed that a Federation of WWOOF Organisations (FOWO) should be formed. This vision should become a reality in 2013, when more than 50 WWOOF groups worldwide will become affiliated to the Federation. WWOOF is now recognised as having an important contribution to make in the wider organic world as it brings more and more people into direct contact with organic growers both independently and through other organisations who are trying to influence policy and consumer demand. Through its newsletters WWOOF organisations inform their members of organic news, views, jobs and training. WWOOF is still growing and 'to wwoof' has entered languages in its own right. WWOOFers have given 1000's of hours of help to organic growers and WWOOF hosts have given their time and experience to WWOOFers and opened the door to a way of living that continues to fundamentally change people's lives.
Mission and Objectives

Mission statement - WWOOF Sweden is a not for profit association linking volunteers with organic farmers and growers to promote cultural and educational experiences based on trust and non-monetary exchange, thereby helping to building a sustainable global community

Main Projects / Activities

WWOOF is an exchange - In return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.
WWOOF organisations link people who want to volunteer on organic farms or smallholdings with people who are looking for volunteer help.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We have experience of working to link 110 000 volunteers with organic farmers yearly.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

GREATIVE promo

DIGITAL TRAINING COURSE “GREATIVE: GREEN STRATEGIES AND CREATIVE SKILLS FOR BUILDING RESILIENT EU PROJECTS”

FOR WHO IS THIS DIGITAL TRAINING COURSE?

We are looking for youngsters aged between 18-30 years old who live or are currently based in Sweden.
This online training course can be interesting for young people who want to learn about environmental topics and develop creative skills, but it is especially relevant for youngsters who are interested in learning how to develop resilient, green EU projects that take into account the environmental challenges as well as current societal challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, as we need to be creative to overcome those.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

During the training course, you will learn about linear and circular economy, environmental challenges we are facing nowadays and how to develop your creative skills (especially in connection to overcoming climate change and environmental degradation). The training modules related to the mentioned topics will prepare you for the next part: learning how to creatively develop circular EU projects (including successful project management in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic).

WHAT’S THE DIGITAL TRAINING’S STRUCTURE?

GREATIVE is a self-paced digital training course developed in Moodle, this allows you to go through the course activities whenever you want, from wherever you want!
It contains 6 modules:
Module 1: Environmental issues mainly led by production, consumption, and resource disposal
Module 2: The concept of circular economy and its main practices
Module 3: A connection between creativity, circularity, and environmentalism
Module 4: How to build successful EU projects; including choosing your topic and partners, setting your objectives and expected results, basic project management and some ideas for the activities you can implement.
Module 5: The context of the COVID-19 pandemic, its impact on EU projects, and its positive and negative environmental impacts
Module 6: A workshop with activities to develop creative skills & new ideas to foster circularity within EU projects

The average length of the training course is around 9 to 10 hours, depending on the pace of each learner. The average length of each module is 1.5 hours, although there are some that might take a little more time and others that might take less.

By the end of the course, there will also be a workshop in which we will gather all together to share our learnings from the Moodle course, and we will also come up with creative solutions that can make the EU projects more circular! The date for this workshop will be agreed with all the participants.

WHAT IS BEHIND GREATIVE?
The GREATIVE digital training is part of the project “YOUCREATE”. This project is co-funded by the Erasmus Plus program of the European Union. It aims to empower young people from diverse cultural and national backgrounds and youth workers to contribute to more sustainable policies and practices to take the lead and utilize creativity to actively participate in the reshaping of our society towards a more sustainable future.

The organisations that are participating in the YOUCREATE project are: Formation et Sensibilisation de Luxembourg (Luxembourg), IBERIKA (Germany), SYNERGASIA ENEGON POLITON (Greece) and SwIdeas AB (Sweden).

More information about the YOUCREATE project can be found on our Facebook page and on the website.

How do I sign up for the course?

If you are interested, just send an email to marina.codorniu@swideas.se and we will contact you very soon.

General Information

Your Middle East Foundation currently has three staff. At the moment, the organization's budget is dominated by a grant from PostkodLotteriets Kulturstiftelse. It also has a partnership with Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University. For more info on mission and projects, see "Mission and Objectives" below.

Mission and Objectives

Your Middle East Foundation strives to share an alternative narrative from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). We do this in order to combat islamophobia and stereotypes about the region in other parts of the world. That objective is achieved partly through the independent platform www.yourmiddleeast.com, and partly through related educational initiatives in Sweden. Through our media platform, events and educational initiatives we connect people within and outside the region and put a spotlight on key issues shaping its future. YourMiddleEast.com publishes stories on politics, culture, arts, society, religion through a diverse global network of some 900+ contributors. We have a monthly readership of 150,000 and roughly 100,000 followers on social media.

Main Projects / Activities

Besides running www.yourmiddleeast.com (launched already in 2011), we are currently focusing our resources on producing a pioneering educational programme targeting high schools in Sweden. The project aims to share a more informed and nuanced perspective on contemporary issues shaping the MENA region, moving beyond what European youth tend to see in the rather static mainstream media. A new platform, published in Swedish, will be launched in 2016, including online portals for teachers and students. A printed teacher magazine will be distributed to every high school in the country. We are now starting to plan for similar efforts in other European countries where xenophobia is on the rise.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We are currently preparing for more initiatives that focus on issues relating to minorities in the EU, and we believe that our innovative educational approach can provide inspiration and learnings for other member organizations. Although we have up until this point focused on sharing alternative narratives from the MENA region specifically, we are also discussing using similar learning tools/methods that could be useful for other themes, e.g. education on migration, which is probably an area where other member orgs. are active.
