General Information
The museum forms part of the State Museums of Berlin, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, with a director and a staff of around 50 curators, restorers, other scientists, and technical employees. The budget is part of the general budget of the State museums and is administrated by the General Directorate resp. the Prussian Cultural Foundation. The funding is generated from the German Federal Budget depending on the State Ministry for Culture and Media, and external funds like the commendable allowance by Alwaleed Philanthropies, by the German Federal Foreign Office, and others. The Museum organises 4 exhibitions per annum and at least one international exhibition every three years besides its other core working areas i.e. research in Islamicate arts and cultures, heritage and conservation, and outreach as a protagonist within the German civil society. Main partners are international Museums and libraries, research institutions, world heritage sites as well as private collectors.
Mission and Objectives

The Museum of Islamic Art in the Pergamon Museum Berlin is the only institution of its kind in Germany, the oldest outside the Islamic World (founded 1904) and counts with its approximately 93.000 pieces as one of the major collections of Islamic Art worldwide.  Its encyclopaedic collection covers the material culture of urban centres for nearly 1400 years, spanning geographically from the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco to the Indian subcontinent. Recognising this unique position of the museum as well as a directive, it is taking a stance in civic discourses against one-sided debates on culture and migration, uses its expertise to cooperate with schools and other institutions for education, and initiates projects to connect different communities in the society, in and out of the museum space itself.
The Pergamon Museum on Museum Island is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Every year up to 900.000 visitors go to see the Museum of Islamic Art and over 600 schools work with the educational material produced by the museum. With its rich art and archaeological collection, the Museum of Islamic Art is one of the leading research institutions dedicated to the material culture of the Middle East and neighbouring regions. The institution houses important collections of archival photographs on Islamic art and architecture as well as an internationally outstanding library focused on art, architecture and archaeology in the world of Islam. It continually expands its international cooperation network with research institutes and museums worldwide and in particular with the source countries of our collections.
Besides its focus on the promotion and research of Islamic art and culture, other core areas of the Museum of Islamic Art include the restoration of historic objects, active engagement into the protection of cultural heritage supporting 12 UNESCO world heritage sites, and the advancement of (trans-)cultural education in Germany and beyond.

Main Projects / Activities

The Museum preserves, studies, restores and communicates the cultural memory of Muslim societies from the Mediterranean to the Pacific, and from Antiquity to the Modern Age. From this particular focus arise museological and scientific duties, but at the same time a civic role. This is all the more the case taking into account the difficult public discourses on Islam and migration in Europe and beyond.
Targetinggroups that, in the broadest sense possible, reflect the social realities in Germany, the Museum of Islamic Arts places a special emphasis on (trans-)cultural education and community work. Especially its regional focus on North Africa and the Middle East appeals the museum team to focus on German Muslim communities and people with personal ties to source countries of our collection. Thereby the strength of the encyclopaedic collection to be able to showcase multiple offers for identity building, in short its possibility to act as a cultural reservoir, can be used for diverse audiences. The Museum of Islamic Art develops these perspectives in projects like a cooperation of local mosque communities and youth centres called “Tamam” to create materials for cultural education and empowerment, or the award winning initiative “Multaka” which trains refugees to guide tours through museums in Berlin, connecting art works and exhibition themes to their own lives and perspectives. At the same time expectations of visitors are to be met to experience another culture in order to find answers to their modern-day questions.
Within the next years the Museum of Islamic Art will move within the Pergamon Museum building and nearly triple its exhibition space. The new layout and concept will unite the multiple aspirations and demands to a present day exhibition of Islamic material and visual culture in new and innovative ways to present the cultural legacy of Muslim societies to a local and an international audience, i.e. to the 4 million visitors of the Museum Island annually.

General Information
„Musik macht Schule“ is a group of professional musicians and pedagogues realising educational projects related to music. The team has four permanent members working within an extensive network of creatives, dancers, artists and social workers representing different institutions. Projects with a volume of € 40.000 were realised in 2013 and a volume increase up to € 60.000 in 2014 seems likely. The project finance is realised via donations and financial aid provided by social and political fundraising and sponsors. Some of our supporting institutions are the “Xenos, Zukunft braucht Perspektive”, the EJF (Evangelisches Jugend- und Fürsorgewerk) and the ESB (Eingliederungsstätte Baselland) as well as some non-profit organisations such as the DGM (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Muskelkranke e.V.) and the IVTS (InteressenVerband Tic und Tourette Syndrom e.V.).
Mission and Objectives

Mission
MMS enables those disadvantaged and excluded and supports their integration back into society. We promote musical skills and other forms of individual expression and offer our target group the opportunity to develop further in musicality within a group. The participants in our projects tell their stories and life experiences by writing their own songs which are made available to a wider public.
Objectives
The MMS network organises music workshops with children, youngsters and immigrants as well as disabled people. Furthermore we engage in projects with apprentices and in the field of adult education. In the workshops our participants learn to write, compose, produce and present their own musical creations. The learning context may vary from intensive music camps to regular meetings over a longer period of time. At the end of the project the participants celebrate their accomplishments with their own CD, music video or performing for a larger audience. Our workshops not only focus on enhancing musical skills but help in developing social competences as well. According to the defined goals of our workshops, we encourage group works, intensify team building and foster the self-confidence of our participants through co-operations within the group.

Main Projects / Activities

A prime example of our impact at international level is our two-year music project “Have A Say“ which was realised in 2011 and 2012 in Hong Kong. The project was implemented in co-operation with the association “Spende Deine Zeit e.V.” and „Chungking Mansions Service Centre“. “Have A Say” brought together musicians, singers and artists from Hong Kong, the Bale region (Switzerland) and Freiburg (Germany). All participants got the opportunity to make their contribution to an intercultural CD production. The project’s main objective was to make the refugees’ voices in Hong Kong heard and to raise awareness for the precarious conditions of asylum seekers. By co-operation with local artists, refugees were able to gain and improve musical skills and to connect with society. The project, which was realised by volunteers from Hong Kong, Germany and Switzerland, was concluded with a professional CD recording, a music video and the release of the songs on iTunes. MMS accompanied the entire process starting with song writing, followed by production up to organization and distribution. Three of the refugees from Hong Kong were invited for an internship at a professional recording studio in 2014 – a success which can be attributed to “Have A Say”. And the project’s participants from Hong Kong still make music together, a fact which represents the sustainable and long-lasting impact of our work.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We have extensive and broad experience in the field of music projects with which we can make a valuable contribution to the Anna Lindh foundation. Our team can serve as an interface with other institutes and organisations while we can also actively contribute to the implementation of new projects. MMS team members come from various backgrounds and offer a great variety of professional skills which can help use synergies from all different areas. These areas can be divided into three main groups.
Organisation (Planning, project management, accounting, media and marketing expertise, project documentation)
Pedagogy (Accompanying and guiding project participants, drawing-up pedagogical structures and road-maps)
Music (Song writing, composing, mixing, teaching instruments, conducting, recording/production, technology, event technology)

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

The institution Anna Lindh Network can be a strong and valuable partner for realizing more projects like „Have A Say“. We aim for a first project in co-operation with the Atrium association as soon as October 2014. Atrium is already a member of the Anna Lindh Network. Atrium’s project in Tunisia is based on three pillars: empowering the blinds, general political education, and teaching intercultural competences. We thought about a co-operative music project enabling blind people to produce their world in sounds and present those worlds in public exhibitions.

The Centers for New Work and New Culture shall help to improve the living conditions in European countries. A new "Orchester der Kulturen" is planned in Timor Leste and scheduled to give its first concerts on Timor Leste's national independence day in 2019. Our next step woudl be Cairo where we already contacted several choirs and conductors / composers to help us lay the groundwork for a "Orchester der Kulturen Egypt". We hope to jumpstart this exciting new endeavour in 2019 with the celebration of the 40 year twin city anniversary between Cairo and Stuttgart in 2019
