General Information

The Mediterranean Platform was founded in 2019 with the aim of bringing together and making visible different cultural Mediterranean research approaches at the University of Konstanz. Arising from a joint initiative of historians and literary scholars it discusses current research projects and new perspectives of Mediterranean Studies. At the same time, the platform serves to network on-going and to initiate future research projects with a Mediterranean focus. Since 2020 it has been supported by the Committee on Research (AFF) of the University of Konstanz. The platform currently has 17 internal and 4 external members. The platform maintains partnerships with partners: 1. international research network GlobalMed (coordinated by the MMSH Aix-en-Provence) 2. interdisciplinary research laboratory Mediterranean Liminalities (University of Cologne)

Mission and Objectives

For a long time, the Mediterranean has been described with magic formulas. Due to actual crises and conflicts we think that a new narrative is required. The Mediterranean Platform Konstanz brings together historical and literary approaches in order to understand cultural heritage and historical perspectives of the region and to sharpen our view for future options. In this sense, our research puts the plurality of Mediterranean spatial configurations in the spotlight. First, in a genealogical perspective, we try to reconstruct marginalised (Arabic, insular, meridional and Ottoman) representations of the region. Second, on the basis of new present-related topics we investigate cross epochs in which way natural, cultivated and imagined spaces as well as their relations to the past and future influenced each other. Third, comparative and entangled historical perspectives point out clearly how the Mediterranean interacted with other world regions and that it can certainly be compared to them.

Meeting of the German Network 2022

Image
network meeting

Learning about diverse civil society initiatives on the local level and welcoming them to our gathering – that was the main objective of the meeting of the German network of the Anna Lindh Foundation that took place September 25th /26th 2022 in Cologne.

Since Cologne is known for an active and diverse urban civil society, we invited local organisations active in that field to take part and to meet our members. We started by getting to know our hosting town on the “city district walk”, led by activist Gabi Linde. Our route led us to civic initiatives that shape urban living-together, from the parklet "Martins Plätzchen" to "Uncle Tan's Kiosk" and the community music room "Das Ohr". We are grateful that Birgit Ellinghaus welcomed us to our member organisation alba Kultur.

Hosted by the youth hostel Köln-Riehl, the meeting included an introductory session for newcomers and organisations who want to become members, followed by a discussion led by Exec. Director Josep Ferré who joined us online. As one of the highlights members and guests presented their activities showing the value and engagement that underlie citizens’ initiatives.

For our “neighbourhood-afternoon”, we welcomed Katharina Roth, managing director of the nebenan.de foundation, that is known for their annual neighborhood award and their parent company’s neighborhood app. Inspired by Katarina’s facts, figures and stories, participants then discussed proposals of the ALF-coordinators and developed ideas for future common network activities, like a virtual penpal-tandem program and a possible new edition of “Mediterranean on the spot”.

Meeting of the German network, online network meeting, June 20, 2022

At the 23rd meeting of the German ALF Network (June 20, 2022, 2 to 4 p.m. online), the focus was on projects of ALF civil society member organizations whose activities respond to the war in Ukraine. For this meeting we could invite Marko Boyko* from the Polish organization LOGOS and Martin Rozumek from Organization for Aid to Refugees from Czech Republic, whose organizations are important contact points for refugees from Ukraine and gave insight into refugees aid projects in Poznań and Prague.

This meeting thus continued the discussion format that was first introduced in September 2021: A get-together with international guests from one of the ALF member states, who report from a civil society perspective on a particular (political) situation in their country and discuss it with the members.

We are pleased to announce that four member organizations of the German network have given an insight into currently running projects and programs:

Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) – Cross Culture Programme
Transnational Corridors e. V. – The African-German Working Community (A.G.W.C.)
Tür an Tür Integrationsprojekte gGmbH – Diversity Management
Kreisau-Initiative e.V. – (Hi)Stories of stolen children during World War II

*Marko Boyko was also one of the EuroMed Citizen Report's who tells in this video how his organization LOGOS responded to the impact of the pandemic.

Fields of Activity
  1. Democracy and community development
General Information
Mehr Demokratie currently has 5.103 members, 12 regional branches and 11 offices. It is the largest non-party organization promoting democracy in the European Union. We operate with a highly professional core team and hundreds of honorary members from our action base. Our board of trustees consists of more than fifty eminent personalities from the fields of science, the arts, economics, and politics. Mehr Demokratie actions include the organisation of conferences and seminars; the creation of petitions and the colleting of signatures; the publication of pamphlets and books and other general campaigning activities. Our work is financed solely by donations and membership fees. Until now we have received no public funding. Mehr Demokratie forms ad hoc partnerships to strengthen campaigns where necessary. It has worked with various organisations from German and the rest of Europe.
Mission and Objectives

Mehr Demokratie is a driving force for referenda and a better electoral law. Every vote counts equally and everybody has the right to participate.
Within Germany we campaign for the introduction of a nationwide referendum and fair rules of play as part of the referendum for the German federal states and communities. Within Europe Mehr Demokratie fights for more extensive democracy and parliamentary reforms. We want modern voting procedures and freedom of information legislation and the democratisation of the European Union.
We wish for a political culture which furthers dialogue and participation. Citizen-initiated referendums, fair election laws and other forms of participation allow citizens to steer the direction of politics. In this, Mehr Demokratie is politically neutral, which means that we only comment on questions relating to democratic procedures and not to political content. We believe that important questions should be decided upon by the citizens.

Main Projects / Activities

We fight for direct democracy on all political levels. Since 2003 we have been active on the EU-level, accompanying the work of the Convention for the Future of Europe - the body that drafted the EU Constitution. At first we devoted our efforts into gaining greater direct democracy, paying special attention to referenda on the Constitution Treaty, and its revised version, the Lisbon Treaty. Our efforts contributed to the inclusion of the European Citizens' Initiative in the EU treaty. We also helped to ensure that the referendum on the Constitution Treaty took place in the Netherlands.
In the year 2005, Mehr Demokratie became a founding member of the network, Democracy International (DI), which is active throughout the EU. Some of the organizations within DI are Mas Democracia (Spain), democratie.nu (Belgium), and Balkan Assist (Bulgaria). Our aim is a European Union which is democratically formed by and controlled by the citizens.

Mission and Objectives

„Miphgasch/Begegnung“enables intercultural and international encounters, especially between young people, promoting a peaceful coexistence based on understanding and respect. Miphgasch achieves its goals by organising and realising encounters with Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, offering educational opportunities and seminars for school classes as well as recreational contexts, and international encounters in the following subject areas: • Confrontation and analysis of the period of National Socialism, its racist ideology and the mass murder of the Jews of Europe • History of Jewish religion and culture in Europe and in the Islamic World • Interreligious and intercultural relations between Judaism, Christianity and Islam • History and present of the Middle East conflict • Racism and Antisemitism in history and present We consider it a priority to include educationally disadvantaged children – with and without a migration background – in our historical-political educational work dealing with the above mentioned topics.

Main Projects / Activities

• Seminars for school classes dealing with the period of German National Socialism, the history of the Middle East conflict, the history of Jews in Arab countries and on the history of interreligious relations between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. • Development of didactic materials on the history of National Socialism, the Middle East conflict and the history of interreligious relations between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, especially emphasising intercultural and multiple perspectives approaches of learning and teaching history. • In 2009, Miphgasch published collected materials under the title “Sharing HISTORIES – Documents for Intercultural Education on the History of National Socialism” in cooperation with the memorial of the House of the Wannsee Conference (Berlin). The collection is one of only very few examples of didactic materials available on National Socialism, which holds up to the challenges of teaching history in an environment of multiple perspectives and sometimes competing narratives.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Miphgasch has gained substantial experience concerning multi-perspective historical-political learning in the immigration society in regard to the above mentioned topics. This experience and expertise are a vital contribution to the network and its work. The topics and questions that are formulated directly from the interaction with youths can provide important impulses for the interaction of projects of different areas (Science, Culture, Society, Politics, and Education).

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Miphgasch has been interested in further developing its international activities. By joining the network we hope to engage in an intensive exchange of information and experiences with the other member projects, gain new contacts and partners for our planed activities as well as to benefit from the insights and experiences of the network members.

MitOst’s annual network gathering: MitMission

Image
mitmission

MitMission is MitOst’s annual network gathering being the successor and new format of MitOst Festival. It brings engaged people and practitioners from civil society, arts, culture, social innovation, and public sector together around one thematic focus. For four days, we will create a safer, inclusive, and participatory space to enable new connections, knowledge transfer and exchange of good practices. We will discuss challenges and potentials in the field, as well as celebrate and support the co-creation of new project ideas. This year’s theme is working in peripheries. Aligned with the thematic focus, the MitMission takes place in Lindow (Mark), a small town in Brandenburg, Germany.

General Information
Motorschiff Stubnitz e.V. is a non-profit association, which operates an 80m former freeze & transport vessel of the GDR high seas fishing fleet. Built in 1964 in Stralsund, MS Stubnitz is listed as a Monument of German Shipbuilding by the city of Rostock. Since 1993 it was transformed into a mobile platform for music, cultural production, documentation and communication. The three converted cargo holds can accommodate around 700 people in total and are ideally suited as venues for live music, exhibitions, performances and media art. The ships maintenance and cultural work is mainly done on a voluntary basis. The responsibility is shared among 5 board members and one manager. The project employs 10 persons (3 of them full time) and 3 trainees. The core number of co-workers in one year is 36. The activities are supported by the City of Rostock, the Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and various administrations in various regions.
Mission and Objectives

Since its inception in 1994, Stubnitz has been and remains a unique cross-cultural project of its kind, committed to the research and documentation of the contemporary music and performance art across different European regions, for the benefit of the artists, their audiences and cultural exchange.
As a kind of “Culture Ark”, it is our mission to chronicle the innovation and diversity of contemporary youth culture and communicate it to the present and future generations.
Doing so, we keep the maritime cultural heritage of Stubnitz the ship, and the millennia-old tradition of maritime cultural exchange alive and accessible to the people.

Main Projects / Activities

Since 1994 Stubnitz has visited 15 different ports across 10 European countries, researching and presenting innovative youth culture and forming partnerships with local culture organizations and promoters. More than 430 000 people have attended more than 1500 events hosted by Stubnitz. More than 3000 live performances by artists from 30 countries all over the world have been documented and preserved in an on-board audio/video archive. Each performance is recorded by 2-3 cameras, live
mix and biophonic audio equipment, then edited and catalogued in an on-board multi-media lab.
Stubnitz maintains a file server and a web site where fragments of this vast archive material are now gradually being offered for public viewing.
