Afroinstituionen consists of a board of 5 people and approximatly 100 members. We have several partnerships with institutions and organisations in Sweden, including Världskulturmuseet, Kulturhuset Bergsjön, Folkuniversitetet, Göteborgs stad, and Demokratifonden. The last three have also provided us with funding for different projects such as 'Been Black' (A workshop series for young black people exploring black history and creativity) and 'The virtual institution' (The creation of a digital platform with empowering resources for afroswedes). We host community-building activities, exhibitions, and workshops for our members.
Afroinstitutionen is a meeting place for Black people in Gothenburg. It exists to empower Black People, to fight racism, to spread knowledge and to improve the health and well-being of the Black community.
Our main objectives are:
- To empower and heal Black People of all ages.
- To combat racism, anti-Black racism, social exclusion, segregation and other types of discrimination against Black People.
- To function as a meeting place for Black People. We aim to connect with, unite and mobilize Black People by creating networks and partnerships.
- To function as a reference group for people/organizations working with endeavors that align with our objectives and values.
- To engage Black People and enable their participation in society. We recognize the participation of Black People in all levels of society as crucial.
- To enforce love for ourselves, we will work towards the well-being of the Black community and all of its members.
- To take control of our own narrative as Black People contributing to a positive and nuanced representation of the African continent and its descendants.
Afroinstitutionen hosts a variety of events, projects, and activities that align with the mission. Activities include, but are not limited to, community-building activities, workshops, conversations, creative retreats, physical activites, attending cultural events, and a book club. So far, we have conducted two major projects, described in the general information above, and with more extensive project descriptions attached.
Through our knowledge and experience in the fields of community organising, black empowerment, anti-rascism, feminism, decolonizing practices, and inclusion. We can contribute with ideas, experience, and strategies for social change, empowerment, healing, and sustainable organising. As an organisation, we were born out of a range of different initiatives including the organisation of the Black Lives Matter demonstration in Gothenburg in 2020. Since then we have focused a lot on sustainability, empowerment, and longevity.
We also have an extensive network. We would be more than happy to support fellow partners in the network with both our expertise and our contacts.
The main reasons for us to join the ALF Network are to collaborate with like-minded people, expand our network, exchange ideas, part take in inspiring activities such as workshops, trainings, cultural events, and conversations. We would also like to see how a partnership can support us in our mission and enable us to host activites in collaboration with partners from the network. In this tough political climate, mobilising, supporting each other, exchanging ideas, and growing together is the key to liberation!
