The main objectives of EKEM, as defined in its founding law, are: conduct of scientific research in the field of European integration and policies and cooperation with other relevant institutions and organizations for the coordination of the results of research, contribution to foreign policy formation and support to the work of the Greek Ministry for Foreign Affairs, organization of activities for the rise of public awareness and the promotion of the European identity, support of public administration by offering know-how on European issues and dissemination of its work in the academic community and the wider public through its publications.
The activities of EKEM are divided into 3 thematic pillars: “Regional transformation”, “EU integration and policies” and “spreading of the European Idea”. The programme “regional transformation” runs 3 projects: the “Mediterranean Observatory”, “Security in Southeast Europe” and “Investment opportunities in Southeast Europe”. The pillar on “EU integration and policies” focuses on the issues of competitiveness and sustainable development, EU policies -such as energy and climate security, ENP and EMP-, migration and crossborder cooperation, EU institutions and EU budgetary allocations. EKEM runs the project “Spreading of the European Idea” by organizing events in all over Greece. Moreover, it is recognized as a European Documentation Centre and it holds a library with academic resources. To disseminate the results of research in all these topics, it organizes events and it publishes a newsletter, the EKEM papers’ series and several books each year.
