General Information
1. Pro Oriente is a NGO founded by Slovak scholars involved in Asian and African studies. The are ca 20 active members of Pro Oriente. All members of Pro Oriente are volunteers, we do not have employed staff. 2. Ca. 30 000 SKK (abou 1000 EUR) 3. Contributions from the members and supporters. 4. Lecture series on Asian countries (history, religion, culture, current issues) in Bratislava and other Slovak cities (together about 50 lectures). Co-organizing (with academic institutions) of seminars and roundtables on Asia and Africa. Small grant for the publication of academic monographs on Asia and Africa published by Slovak authors. 5. Cooperation with the Institute of Oriental Studies (Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislav), Deparment of the Countries and Languages of East Asia (Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University, Bratislava). Cooperation with the BUBO travel agency (lecture series). Cooperation with the Museum of History, Slovak National Museum (lecture series).
Mission and Objectives

The main objective is to promote Asian and African cultures to general public in Slovakia through lectures and other activities. The members of Pro Oriente, who are actively involved in academic research on various aspects of Asia and Africa, strongly believe that it also the responsiblity of academic community to spread their knowledge to the general public and thus contribute to the prevention of xenophobia and racial prejudices, in order to esablish a fruitful intecultural dialogue.The second aim of Pro Oriente is to support Asian and African studies in Slovakia.

Main Projects / Activities

1. Series of lecture at the Museum of History on China (8 lectures, autumn 2006, spring 2007).
2. Series of lecture at the BUBO travel agency and 2 events introducing Arabic countries through lectures and music (15 lectures, 2 events, 2004-2005).
3. Coorganizer of a seminar on Slovak and Czech travellers in Asia, 2nd Half of the 19th Century - 1st Half of the 20th Century (13th of November 2007).
4. Small grants for printing cost of academic publications (5 books).
5. Cooperation with the Faculty of Philosophy in the creation of a course on Intercultural contacts for the students of the Faculty.
