Abstract

This paper discusses the Occitan language, a regional language in the south of France which covers regions from Bordeaux to Turin in Italy. This piece in particular goes over the education of France and the education of the Occitan language, its history and how it is implemented within the French education system. It discusses the development of the teaching of regional languages in France and its impact on French society. The work focuses on the development of Occitan education within France and how it can be used to strengthen the Occitan language currently and in the future. It goes into the development of teaching material for the Occitan language and the history of the Occitan region and how ti has shaped the culture of the region as well as into the regions of Piedmont in Italy and Val d'Aran in Catalonia in Spain. The publication goes into the different types of education that is offered in the Occitan language such as vocational education which is teaching teachers how to teach in the Occitan language. The paper notes that the benefits of bilingualism are high for young pupils in that starting to learn a second language at a younger level is highly beneficial for them in the future not only for mental ability but for them to be able to learn further languages. These schools are called Calendrates which are bilingual Occitan and French schools. The paper also notes how there is education for adults who want to learn Occitan. There is a programme called ‘Apprenons l’occitan which means “Let’s learn Occitan'.
