Abstract

This article details the current and future prospects of Italy’s development cooperation. The article discusses what Italians think towards development cooperation. Showing that Italians are generally favourable towards development cooperation in its current state. When asked if development cooperation should increase or decrease the population was split as to whether it should stay the same or increase with the majority of Italians saying that development cooperation funding should not decrease. When looking at the political parties in Italy and comparing their views on development cooperation there is a significant amount of variance. When looking at the more liberal and left-leaning parties in Italy they favour increasing development cooperation. Including newer political parties such as the Five Star Movement their members also approve of investment in development cooperation. Furthermore, the centre-right party members also would increase development cooperation. While far right-wing parties such as Lega Nord and Fratelli di Italia are against increasing development cooperation and favour spending domestically.  The article then discusses the current financial state of Italy’s development cooperation explaining that Italy’s budget law for 2023 allocates around €6.2 billion to euros to various ministries. Explaining that funding for development cooperation comes from explaining that there will be €1.5 billion available in 2023 for development cooperation which is a 0.31 percent increase compared to previous years which civil society is happy to see. In prospects for future funding of development cooperation, the article states that the future depends on the needs of the Italian population with an ever ageing population this is a great challenge for Italy.
