General Information

The Finnish Somalia Network (FSN) is an ideologically, politically and religiously independent umbrella organization and co-operative body for organizations that conduct or plan to conduct development cooperation projects in Somalia. FSN was founded in 2004 and registered in 2009. It currently employs 4 people and has 9 board members. It has an annual budget of approximately 300,000 euros deriving funding from membership fees, grants, state aid and fundraising. FSN executes development cooperation projects in different sectors and areas in Somalia with its member organizations and offers its member organizations peer support, training and advice in the form of seminars, consultations and information service. FSN also publishes an electronic, trilingual Afrikan Sarvi – Horn of Africa Journal to bring developmental issues of the region to the attention of the wider audience. More recently, the Network has started a volunteer program for immigrant background youth.

Mission and Objectives

The Finnish Somalia Network (FSN) is an ideologically, politically and religiously independent umbrella organization and co-operative body for organizations that conduct or plan to conduct development cooperation projects in Somalia. It executes development cooperation projects in different sectors and provides training to strengthen the capacity of its member organisations. Doing so it relieves the pressures the civil society faces in Somalia, and contributes to peacebuilding and development in the country. FSN is well-known and trusted expert among funders, media and other partners.

Main Projects / Activities

FSN is currently engaged in two environmental projects that target desertification, one of the root causes of the current migration flows. The first project began in 2012 and with its positive results another project was launched two years later. These project have been successful not only in environmental terms, but they have been able to generate cooperation between actors coming from different parts of the region that have previously experienced challenges in working together. Another long term project the FSN has been committed to is the electronic journal, Afrikan Sarvi - the Horn of Africa. The journal caters the wider audience bringing academic news and studies from the region to their attention. More recently FSN has began developing a volunteer program for immigrant background youth in Finland to fully integrate them to the Finnish society and to improve their societal skills and employment possibilities. Also, the Network is constantly preparing new development cooperation projects with organization partners as well as developing business cooperation.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

As an umbrella organisation we have an excellent and enthusiastic network through which we can distribute information and knowledge. Also, we bring our own expertise to the benefit of the ALF community.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Tackling the root causes of illegal migration, radicalism and other challenges the Mediterranean and European community is currently facing is very important in order to solve or at least alleviate the problems. As many of our members are in fact diaspora organisations as well as active in development cooperation, we feel we have a lot to offer in these current topics.

Sustainable Christmas volunteering team project by VEFI group

Image
A group of people

Do you want to get to know more about how to celebrate the joyous, dark nights of winter, while at the same time you're reducing waste, making home-made Christmas presents and saving precious energy?

This is exactly what a team of young 12 volunteers are currently doing in the beautiful Finnish city of Kokkola. Their volunteer work will culminate in a self-organised Christmas gathering in a few days. Together with the people from around Kokkola they pre-celebrate Christmas in an environmentally friendly way. The project is currently taking place under the instruction and guidance of an expert and three social workers.

It covers the following topics on a theoretical and particularly practical level:

  • Environmental friendly (vegan) food
  • Waste reduction + self made presents
  • Energy consumption and alternative ways of energy production

Being able to learn and teach themselves and others about each topic is one of the main objectives of the project. Thus, the volunteers already had a session with a class of the local school to teach them about vegan cooking.

Like this, the volunteers can take matters into their own literal hands and start cooking and crafting, all whilst they are forming unique connections with the people you are working with! So, they broaden their knowledge on how to save this planet, while still enjoying life (and Christmas!).

This project is organized by VEFI group (The Vegan Environmentally Focused International Group). The project is done in collaboration with CUBIC.

General Information
Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) is a multidisciplinary and international research centre, whose mission is to conduct high quality research on the causes of war, non-violent resolution of conflicts, and conditions for peace. In accordance with the present research program the focus of research is on peaceful change, to which all projects are related. TAPRI research is open and its results are published on international and national academic forums, including the Institute’s own publication series. TAPRI researchers also engage in teaching in their fields, mainly on post-graduate and post-doctoral levels. In accordance with TAPRI’s national mandate, as confirmed by the Ministry of Education, TAPRI researchers teach in several Finnish universities. TAPRI research has from the very beginning been based on an extensive international co-operation and networking. TAPRI and its researchers also bring their contribution to the debates in the Finnish society. This societal service function includes information to the media, civil society organizations, and educational institutions.
Mission and Objectives

TAPRI research is based on the Nordic, as well as on the broader European tradition of peace research. The overarching goal is to study the root causes of wars and conflicts, the processes of their emergence and development, as well as the conditions for conflict resolution and sustainable peace. TAPRI also undertakes the responsibility to further develop peace and conflict research in Finland. Its activities have from the beginning been multi-disciplinary and international, and this is the case today more than ever before.
TAPRI research domains deal with problems caused by structural violence both within and between states, as well as with conflict management and resolution, peace and reconciliation processes, and the social and political challenges of post-conflict situations.
TAPRI research themes are at least partly linked with specific geographic areas. The research on the Arctic region provides a particular perspective on global environmental politics and development, as well as on related conflicts. The institute’s European studies touches upon various themes, such as global governance, ethnic and national conflicts, border formation, and human mobility. A considerable part of the research on Europe centers on the Balkans and Russia, as well as the neighboring Eastern European and Central Asian states. Topics such as conflict management and resolution, prevention, reconciliation and mediation are particularly relevant in this context. TAPRI’s research activities on the Mediterranean and Euro-Mediterranean relations focus on international politics in the region, on their cultural and socio-economic dimensions, as well as internal development, domestic social movements, the youth, and the movement of people.
The decrease of inter-state conflicts and the increase of internal violence in recent decades have given rise to new themes of peace research. One of the most important contributions of TAPRI to the development of these new themes has to do with the role of gender relations and youth in conflict management and resolution. Much emphasis has been put on gender-based violence and the UN Resolution 1325 in this connection. One of the latest innovations is visual peace research, which approaches the traditional peace research agenda from the point of view of visual images and art. The aim is to provide a deeper understanding of the different dimensions of conflicts with the help of new kinds of representations and narratives.
In addition to continuing the existing traditions and further developing new research themes and approaches , TAPRI participates in the qualitative development of peace and conflict research regarding both theory and methods.
TAPRI’s research activities are largely comprised of individual research projects, which vary in their extent and duration.

Main Projects / Activities

Peace research, projects, seminars, conferences, teaching in Master and Doctoral level, TAPRI research grant etc
