Join Shereen and Nina as they discuss Shereen's book, "Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World" and open a window on this largely hidden aspect of Arab societies…

General Information

NGO ARAFBEST is a voluntary-based organisation. Currently, there are 20 members of our team; most of them are students or graduates of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Our main project is the annual Festival of Arab Culture. Our budget is modest (around 12, 000 Euro per year). The main sponsor and partner of our activities is the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (80% of the whole budget); in addition, we regularly receive financial support from some Arab embassies based in Prague and from some private firms. We have a strong network of local partners (e.g. Insaan, Czech-Arab Association, Oriental publishing house Dar Ibn Rushd). We have great relations with the Lebanese festival Beirut Animated, too.

Mission and Objectives

NGO ARABFEST promotes the culture of The Middle East, the culture of the
Arab world. By organising different cultural events, we want to
emphasize the fact that Arab culture has a lot to offer. We want to give
a chance for everyone who comes to the events organised by us to form his
or her own opinion on the Arab world with more detailed information,
with (at least a bit) of personal experience. To show that the media
picture is sometimes just a one-sided view. The main aim is to develop
intercultural dialogue not only among different academic fields, but
also among the wider public.

Main Projects / Activities

The main activity of NGO ARABFEST is organising the annual Festival of
Arab Culture. The festival usually takes place in Spring in the cities of Pilsen
and Prague. Our team has been preparing the festival every year for
12 years and made it one of the most important cultural events in the
region and the biggest Arab culture-related event in the Czech Republic.
The festival program offers concerts, lectures by Czech and foreign
experts, debates, dance performances, exhibitions, workshops,
competitions, food tastings and much more – all tied to the culture of
the Middle East.
We also organise smaller-scale events, e.g. movie screenings and
discussions, and we take part in organising various exhibition projects
during the year.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We do our work very well. Well, as it is not an occupation for any member of our NGO, it is clear that we fulfill the goals of our organisation just with passion. But the outcomes of the activities, and the feedback from experts and the general public, also show that we do it well. Over the past twelve years we have learned how to organise the event, how to promote it, and how to cooperate; we know our field of study, and we know the Arab world from different perspectives. We can contribute to the ALF Network in the Czech Republic with our experience, share our practices, and broaden the range of activities and kinds of events the Network promotes. We gladly will. Last, but not least, we are definitely a reliable partner.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

All of our team share the opinion that being a member of the ALF Network
can bring us only advantages. We could meet new partners, start new
cooperations and new projects. We can get feedback "from outside", from
much more experienced organisations. We would like to be more active
also abroad, to promote our activities in an international context.
Although we do have contacts all around the Arab world with different
organisations, galleries and individuals, we would like to strengthen
our international network. And definitely, we have to and want to get
better at what we are doing. By joining the ALF Network, without any
doubts we can do so.

Art Exhibition "Quiet Waters, Torn Moss"

Image
exhibition

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in cooperation with Al Nahda Association for Scientific and Cultural Renaissance prepared a public opening of the Art Exhibition "Quiet Waters, Torn Moss" on the occasion of the Presidency of the Czech Republic in the Council of the European Union and in regards to COP 27 held this November in Sharm al Sheikh.

The exhibition of Czech artists deals with the way of experiencing nature and its reflection. To stop for a moment, to look again at the previously known, to let yourself be influenced by something as familiar and almost ordinary to the Czechs as a walk in the forest. From this inner seclusion in nature and inspiration from the forest, water, natural processes and organic forms, the works in the exhibition will also have a critical undertone within the framework of the negative impact of human action on nature. Various media will be represented at the exhibition, as each of the artists will bring their own, unique perspective – from photography and drawing to video and sound installation.

Exhibiting artists: Jaromír Harna, Pavel Skrott, Jan Kuntoš, Petr Košárek, Magdalena Dubnová
Curator: Magdalena Dubnová

The exhibition opening will also include a commented tour by the Czech artists.

Date: 22nd November 2022, 6:00 PM

The Exhibition will be held until 12th December 2022

Venue: Al Nahda Association for Scientific and Cultural Renaissance - Jesuit Roof Gallery

Free entrance

General Information

We are building a new digital encyclopedia that will enable everyone to see the whole of the long-term socio-political reality in today’s world. Inspired by Wikipedia, we wish to bring an open-access educational tool tailored to the needs of non-professional audiences globally but with high-perspective descriptions created merely by selected specialists from international universities and other research institutions.

Mission and Objectives

We aim at the system of gaining knowledge about the political and social reality of the world we live in. We observe that thanks to new media technologies, one can search for almost any existing correct/true information at any time. Having only an internet connection, we can, in a second, find out about the latest news all over the world, listen to personal stories of all or gain scientific knowledge about various special issues through Wikipedia and other online encyclopedias. And when a specific topic becomes popular in media outlets, one can quickly become an expert on any issue. The global internet has become a space of an indefinite amount of specific information accessible to all.

At the same time, we paradoxically observe how distorted our images of the whole nature of the world we live in are. And it doesn't usually concern merely reality on the global level but also in our own countries.

When exploring possible causes of this issue, specifically on the level of the global system of digital information and media, we also observe how putting all existing information together into correct and precise mosaics of the whole reality is difficult. Particularly for non-expert people without extensive knowledge of the broad context of individual issues or situations in individual world areas. All the more so for people who didn't have a chance to gain higher education in social or human sciences, media literacy or simply cannot afford to spend hours in libraries due to their work or existential troubles.

Thus we wish to help everyone who wants to understand the whole picture correctly, allowing them to see the mosaic of socio-political reality created by experts.

Main Projects / Activities

Inspired by Wikipedia and its success, we dream of a new open-access and highly user-friendly digital encyclopedia tailored to the needs of non-expert audiences, which becomes a similar collaborative platform for a global community of authors - social and human scientists from all over the world. An encyclopedia which will be specifically designed to systematically and from a higher perspective reflect on the whole of the long-term reality in individual countries, same as globally. Through the concept of big-picture panoramic entries and an interactive map of the world inspired by Google Maps, we will gradually compile the needed mosaic. No details and no ad hoc topics. Neither will we look at popular topics. We aim to launch a platform in which specialists in individual subjects and areas will gradually implement carefully prepared plans of needed topics to capture objectively and comprehensively the whole of reality in individual world regions.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We offer a unique academic platform that provides the general public with a reliable big-picture source of information, bringing together academics from the global North and South. The encyclopedia can accompany existing media outlets or educational projects and campaigns at European schools and non-governmental organizations.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We adhere to the ALN endeavour of intercultural and civil society dialogue. By joining the network, we would like to establish further cooperation with international research institutes, media and NGOs to participate in international projects and thus contribute to a more informed public debate in the European Union, the Mediterranean region and elsewhere.
