Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue Conference

Image
intecultural

Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, in cooperation with the Prague-based Ambassadors of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states, Anna Lindh Foundation and in partnership with Renovabis and Porticus, we organise the 7th Conference on Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue. This year our distinguished guests will discuss "Building Bridges towards Peace."

We dedicate our 7th successive conference on Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue to recognising our cultural differences and building effective communication to build bridges toward peace. Intercultural and interfaith dialogue can bridge distinct cultural experiences and vocabularies to reach a shared understanding of the value of a human being. We realise the power of interfaith and intercultural dialogue more than ever to foster greater awareness of diversity, mutual respect, and peace in times of rising challenges that face humanity.

In building bridges toward peace, the conference highlights the necessity to build effective diplomatic communication among policymakers with different approaches to ongoing conflicts and the role of religion and faith-based organisations in the process. Effective diplomatic communication is considered key in facilitating the transition of fragile communities toward resilience, preventing the misuse of religion during conflicts and increasing support for peace.

To this end, the conference will hold 3 panel discussions. The first one aims to find out the common ways religion can build resilience across different cultures in communities. The second one aims to identify convenient diplomatic tools to prevent the misuse of religion during times of conflict. The third one aims to discuss the future of religion and how religion makes a difference in international relations.

Goals of the Conference

  • Discuss ways in how religion can be used as a source of resilience for communities from diverse cultures to reinstate peace
  • Let our culturally varying insights and experiences speak in identifying the convenient diplomatic tools to prevent the misuse of religion in support of peace

Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue Conference 2023

Image
intercultur

In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and the Anna Lindh Foundation, we would like to cordially invite you to our conference on Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue.

The conference on Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue will be dedicated to women's rights, and how they can be articulated with freedom of religion. The goal of intercultural and interfaith dialogue is to open channels of discussion in order to raise a greater awareness of the diversity, mutual recognition, equality, and freedom of all human beings. We want to build bridges to allow peaceful coexistence and fraternity in a time of crisis and conflict.

One year ago, the revolt of Iranian women put the issue of women's rights back at the heart of political and societal debates regarding the Middle East and North Africa. Women's rights are often perceived as conflicting with religious values and religious institutions. But this is not a fatal problem, as everyone can benefit from more freedom and empowerment. Religious minorities in particular are interested in such issues as equality of rights and respect for individual freedom. Yet, women from these minorities are particularly vulnerable to violence, discrimination, and unequal access to resources.

The expert community, policymakers, diplomats, and civil society can contribute to improving the living conditions of everyone by opening channels of communication towards an integration of women's rights and the rights of religious minorities. Religious actors and religious organizations have an important role to play in this dialogue. In the long run, freedom of belief benefits everyone, men and women, and members of religious minorities and majorities alike. Authoritarian regimes prioritize targeting the most vulnerable categories of people, as we can see with the forced sterilization of Uyghur women. Conversely, the more a society is open and respectful of its own diversity, the stronger and richer it becomes, thanks to the various inputs of its individuals. Women's rights and freedom of belief are both inalienable parts of human rights.

This year's conference on Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue is hosted by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the International Religious Freedom of Belief Alliance and the Anna Lindh Foundation.

Goals of the conference:

  • To discuss ways in which women's empowerment can be a source of resilience for religious minorities, and how freedom of belief and women's rights can mutually reinforce each other.
  • To establish a dialogue between individuals with different experiences in order to identify the best diplomatic tools to support this empowerment and freedom of religion.

Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue: Enriching Future Communities

Image
Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue

The Covid-19 pandemic might have been our generation´s most formative crisis experience. We have navigated through unprecedented lockdowns of our societies and immense economic shocks. We witnessed international interaction downgraded close to zero as well as vacant churches, mosques and synagogues. We understood the great value of communication, social interaction and open world.

Similar to past lessons of this scale and human impact, the crisis made us feel fragile or even fearful, it uncovered some dead-ends of our socio-economic evolution and yet offered inspiration for the future. Sustainable development, security and prosperity, social coherence and solidarity as well as identity and moral integrity – all these values need to be re-assessed now with fresh emphasis and urgency. We believe that such a task is best done through comprehensive, open and honest dialogue.

The fifth successive conference dedicated to the intercultural and interfaith dialogue, hosted by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Prague based Ambassadors of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states, Institute of International Relations and Anna Lindh Foundation; provides a platform for expert, policymakers, youth and general public exchange.

We aspire to contribute to long-term global efforts enhancing mutual understanding and multilateral cooperation while at the same time focus our attention on very present opportunities and threats which need to be addressed in consensual, peaceful and creative ways. Reflecting upon Future Communities, young people participation, opinions and ownership seem indispensable and beneficial. Community life needs care and constant effort to flourish. The Conference aims to contribute to this end by providing a platform to debate and identify potential ways how to reach there.

Key axes of the Conference discourse, i.e. three main methodical perspectives, could be described as 1/ Academic descriptive as well as normative evaluation of the post-crisis situation we have faced including a positive role of the faith-based communities; 2/ Diplomats – interfaith and intercultural dialogue professionals´ assessment of what should be done in practice for the sake of social resilience and prevention of possible further deterioration; 3/ Civil society - in particular youth - perception and reflections and their expectations vis-à-vis the future.

Let us proceed from a common starting point - crisis as an opportunity - via an outstanding gathering of experts and public at the Conference towards a shared global responsibility and intentional actions. Unlike embarrassing populist or malign radical voices, let us esteem our enriching and mutually inspiring potential while respecting - not ignoring - our diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

Some framing questions suggested to possibly steer participants thinking ahead of the Conference:  How did you perceive pandemic lockdowns and disconnection in your home community and abroad? What have you done to overcome these limits in your professional as well as personal lives? Which short- and long-term trends (both positive/negative) seem to have enforced over the last year? Could the globally shared sense of uncertainty bring about any positive sentiments of global solidarity? What particular values and strengths could be associated with the resilience of faith-based societies? Which key takeaways shall be controlled and/or further promoted within the expert and public debates?

General Information

IYNF is an international organization bringing together Young Naturefriends and their organizations across Europe and beyond. It currently has 18 member and 14 partner organizations with more than 120.000 young members organized in over a thousand local groups. The working structure consists of the Secretariat based in Prague and the decision making bodies, which are the General Assembly, the Council and the Presidium appointed for 2 years. The main sources of funding are the Erasmus+ programme and European Youth Foundation. IYNF is also financially supported by its mother organization Naturefriends Internationale. IYNF regularly organizes capacity building meetings for its member and partner organizations as well as training courses, which are aligned with the main theme of the year. In the recent years, the topics of using gamification for raising awareness about climate crisis or using outdoor education methods to prevent mental issues of youth were tackled. The topic of the year of 2023 is called Extremism – A danger for Climate Justice?

Mission and Objectives

The fundamental reason for IYNF's existence or what we jointly want to become: an international network to connect and inspire Young Naturefriends for living values of respect, solidarity, equality, sustainability and love and care for nature.

Main Projects / Activities

Training courses, Youth exchanges, Paper and electronic publications and knowledge systems, Toolboxes on sustainable youth work and project management, Meetings and conferences for networking and cooperation, Permanent working groups and informal networks, Public exhibitions and other public educational activities, Communication and information channels.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

As an international organization IYNF not only contributes in one country, but has a European impact. Our Secretariat is based in Prague and office members and volunteers are encouraged to organize local events – as an example we can mention sustainability workshops or green tours, that are accessible for the public. We believe that organizations with similar aims should cooperate and develop their values together to have a better positive impact on the society.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Even if IYNF is a well-established organization, we are still interested in finding new members and partner organizations, especially in the countries where we have no partners yet. Networking and programming belong to our main activities and we believe Anna Lindh Network could help us to enlarge our network and to find partners with similar values. We believe we can contribute with our building capacity in the environmental field. As a youth organization we also need to follow up on the changing needs of our youth members and learn constantly. We believe this learning process can be developed most effectively in discussion and cooperation with others.
