General Information

"LAUKKU" is founded by an international group of artists and researchers (Latvia, France, Finland). There are no emplyed staff, the organization is operating on project and voluntary basis. As this is only the first year of operation of "LAUKKU" it is not easy to predict the yearly budget, we suppose that funds raised during first couple year could up around 30 000 EUR. The main funding sources are planned to be the State Culture Capital Foundation, regional municipalities, Nordic Baltic funds, EU funds for culture. Modalities of actions include various projects, exchanges and seminars. Main partners are arts media, regional municipalities and network of artists and theoreticians believing in the mission of "LAUKKU".

Mission and Objectives

LAUKKU is and international collective founded by Max Ryynänen (Finland), Annemari Autere (France), Inta Balode, Valts Miķelsons and Linda Krūmiņa (Latvia) in 2017 as a continuation of yearly laboratories “New Dance in a New Place” since 2013. Our aim is to promote contemporary art in rural and peripheral areas, build artistic alternatives through challenging urban lifestyles in big cities and centers. “Laukku” means “travel bag” in Finnish and it relates to “lauku” meaning “rural” in Latvia.

Main Projects / Activities

Main activities of "LAUKKU" that have started before the foundation of the organization (under the umbrella of Choreographers Association) are: - since 2011 www.journal.dance.lv - since 2013 travelling education project/festival "New Dance in a New Place" - since 2012 workshops for young arts writers and artistic exchanges - since 2012 involvement in the Baltic Nordic dance writers network "The Writing Movement"

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Inta Balode (representing Choreographers Association and Olga Zitluhina Dance Company) has been involved in the national network since its very first days in 2005. Before and also in the future the contribution to the network would be proposals of different arts, particularly contemporary dance and arts, activities. Both as events to watch and even more as the ones to participate, where art becomes a tool for profound dialogue among various people and groups of people.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

For Inta Balode personally it is just a continuation of being part of the network. For "LAUKKU" joining network seems very logical taking into consideration the mission of the organization which is oriented towards peripheral, also different, not always understood and accepted areas, groups and people. Also as "LAUKKU" is already international and has members living both on North of the Medditaranean Sea and on West, North and East coasts of the Baltic Sea, it seems natural to expand collaborations also with the other coasts of the Medditaranean.
